They most likely will not allow you to do this because of any possible pending transactions. Talk with your existing bank to see what the maximum withdrawal is that you can make and close the account to any new transactions. You will then have to make a final withdrawal after the set time limit for all transactions to clear.

You would ask for a Cashier's Check or an Official Check from the bank. (Different names for the same thing.) Then deposit it. When you do, call the new bank's attention to the fact that this is a bank check. That might reduce the hold time that they put on it. It will clear overnight in the same town, but holds are determined by each bank's "availability of funds" policy, so you need to ask.

Yes, just go in and tell them you want to close it out and ask for a cashier's check made out to you. Some banks charge a small fee, but it's worth it for the peace of mind.

If you are closing a checking account, you can just write a check to the new bank to zero out the balance in your old account. However, some banks don't consider a zero balance to close out the account and will keep it open and possibly charge you a fee if you were supposed to keep a minimum balance.

Also, if you are closing a checking account, they may require that you go X-number of days with no activity on your account before they will allow you to pull out the balance and close it. Even if they don't, you need to make sure all checks written have cleared.

The cashier's check - you will probably be able to draw against it immediately by writing checks. I doubt you are able to make an immediate cash withdrawal, but if you need cash, get that out of the old account before closing it. A cashier's check will take probably 5 days to actually clear, but since it is certified, you will be able to write checks against that amount on your new account.

you should be able to transfer the funds electronically to the new account. some banks let you do this online but smaller banks will require you to go in and have a teller or banker do it for you. there is sometimes a fee for inter-institutional transfers such as these. the good thing is your funds are usually available for immediate withdrawal.
if you don't want to do that you can always go dow and get a cashier's check for the full amount. it's just like a check and you can go down to your new bank and deposit it rigt away. availability depends on your old bank. it shouldn't be more than a few days though.

Ask for a cashiers check for the amount you are withdrawing made out to you and deposit that into your new account. It's as simple as that.

Yes, they can give you a certified check to give you when you leave....or...

Sometimes the NEW bank will agree to do a wire request for free in order to move your money.

Either way, it's your choice.

Ask the bank where you intend to do your future banking that question .
They may set up the transfer so you don't need to hand carry anything .
