the cat is neutered. He was fixed when he was a kitten. It just started happening. Nothing really has changed for a behaveral issue and he's not sick. He does have a brother cat too. So maybe there's a territorial thing going on. I actually got a larger cat box for both. I'll try using two litter boxes. I also use that compressed wood and newspaper for litter.

I went to a vet regarding this exact issue, her answer was as follows:

have two litter boxes per cat, one for peeing, one for pooping
have dust free, unscented litter, as scented can cause an infection or irritation
clean both on a daily basis, I know this is a pain, but cats have a much stronger sense of smell, and think of what your bathroom would be like if you didn't flush every day ( eww)
of course if these simple steps do not resolve your issue, the cat may need to see a vet

I hope this helps

Unfortunately he may never stop. I had a male cat for years, he always used the litter box, never had a problem with him spraying or peeing in the floor and he'd been "fixed" since he was a kitten. But one day he just started spraying. I had to put him outside.

The vet also told me that it could be a sign of illness. He said if a cat is sick it doesn't like to use the pee or poop in the same place he's peed or pooped before.

Sorry. Good luck.

Rhonda is absolutely right. All cats prefer to have one box for urinating in and one for defecating in. I guess this gives them more room to walk around in the box without stepping on a clump of pee or a piece of poo (gross!).

J 2 is a moron! Do not under any circumstances beat the cat. And animals ARE NOT DISPOSABLE!! If the cat starts soiling the carpet it is YOUR responsibility to fix the behavior. Getting rid of the cat is just downright lazy. People like J 2 should be banned from owning pets because it is so very obvious that they dont have the slightest idea of how to take care of them.

Beat the crap out if the cat if you catch him in the act. Seriously, you will not get rid of that smell, don't let the cat ruin your furniture. Have the cat neutered, clean the litter box daily. Have you made any changes to the household? We had a male cat who started acting strange when we brought the baby home and ended up just getting rid of him after he did it again 6 months later when we thought the problem was solved.

Get him fixed. Make sure the litter box is cleaned every day. Move it closer to where he eats. Clean the spots where he goes very thoroughly using products that will eliminate the scent completely. If none of those work, then try taking him to the vet. There could be a medical cause.

Males dont like to use litterboxes with other cats. If he is peeing on the floor it could be a more serious problem. Take him to the vet or call them. Kidney, bladder, or even behavior problems will cause that.
