Because God is easier to explain than science. That's the only reason religion still exist, anyway - as a crutch for the layperson.

One is DRIVEN to THANK someone for SPARING THEM
John Lennon didn't get spared. That is a sad fact of life. But all the scientists and doctors couldn't save John. He died from a bullet wound.
John was actually a little relgious. And little not.
But you have to look at that fact
Some people WALK AWAY from something that FACTS and SCIENCE and REALITY says should have killed them.
Doctors do heart surgery on young people and they won't revive.
What does the Doctor thing.
I did something wrong
I'm goofed
I'm a bad person
I should be held responsible for my MALPRACTISE
Many Doctors, to keep their sanity with a patient who is 21 dies from a value job, by saying IT WAS GOD'S WILL.
What would you rather have an INSANE DOCTOR who goes into an institution or a DELUSIONAL ONE who believes in a GOD who says NO WAY, who still is sane and goes back in and does again next week and saves people, some of the time.

True Christians believe that God rules over EVERYTHING in our lives. This includes the bad as well. We praise God when good comes into our lives, and we pray to God when the evil comes in.
To state your example, "If your legs get crushed and just lie in bed praying to God to walk, you never will, but if you get up everyday little by little and try your absolute hardest, you might walk." - We pray for the strength to allow us to get up and walk.
Satan will tempt us everyday and try to make us believe that God isn't there. The only thing we have to do, is have faith that He is. God bless!

Or, you could ask, why do people seem to BLAME everything on God? Maybe it is true that leaders get all the press. lol.It is a two way street. I am a Christian and believe in God and Jesus, but, I do a lot of things through my own power and my own will. But, I have to give God the credit for giving me the will and power. After all, He is my Savior and I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me. Thanks for the question, and have a great day.

Jared hit it dead on. It comes down to utter laziness. Most people do not like to use their brain anymore and they let others make all their decisions for them. Besides that they can't blame stuff that happens to them in life on science, they need a way to fall back from taking their responsibilities.

Impossible
Romans 8:32
He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?
He gets the credit!

Without God, none of us would exist.
Accordingly, He deserves all the credit.

I'm on the other side of things on this one - I think folks need to give Him more credit. Much more.

Not too much credit,
just too much blame.
