I am not a racist by any means, but how does giving blacks thier own History Month or Television Network make them feel equal? All this does is to prove to them that they're different? Doesn't it kind of defeat the purpose?

to Pastor Mike and all those others who have to reply with an ignorant response...if you felt that way then why waste your energy by answering? You could've saved yourself the trouble and went on to another question. How hard can it be for a pastor to speak to someone respectfully? If that's what your god teaches you then he doesn't do a very good job.

My point is simply this...if it is socially acceptable for blacks to have these things and not whites? Someone answered by saying "if whites tried to do it, it would be misconstrued as racism" If we are truly all equal then whites should be allowed to be proud of thier culture as well without being labeled as racist.

Once again some people are not taking the time to understand before they spout off at the mouth.

1. My additional comments were not directed solely at pastor mike if you take the time to read you will see it says "and all the others who replied with an ignorant response"

2. I am not white, therefore I was asking this question from an unbiased point of view. I believe we are all equal and should therefore all be allowed to celebrate our cultures without being called racist.

Video Production....
I never did understand why people post answers pissing and moaning about repetitive questions when they are the ones that wasted thier own time by answering it. Get over yourself.

Most of the ethnic pride of whites is more about the country their ancestors came from. So you have the Irish-Americans celebrating on St. Patrick's Day, the Italian-Americans celebrating on St. Joseph's Day, etc. The main reason there is a "Black History" or an "African-American History" period of time is because most African-Americans don't have any more detail than that about where their ancestors came from. They were separated from their heritage by the slave trade, and cannot often trace it back the way Alex Haley did.

I look forward to a time when history and culture and so forth is not divided up this way at all, but is just people learning about the history and culture of our whole race: the human race.

Don't you think that since cable TV has been around for 50 years that someone would have made a "W.E.T." if it was at all popular? Oh wait, there's ABC, BBC, CBC, CBS, CMT, FOX, and NBC. ps There are months for a whole bunch of different people, not just blacks (only trolls think there is only a "Black History Month"), including March, which is "Women's History Month". Given that regardless of race, about 50% of the world is women, don't you think SIX months should be "Women's Months", or do you not consider women people???

A lot of Balck oriented companies came into being because there was a lack of blacks represented. For example, lots of History books leave out blacks and other minorities that contributed to this country. Due to the lack of blacks on Television, they started BET. This was the reason for it. And, as long as such companies go on making money, there seems to be a need for it.

You are a racist and an idiot. I'm so sick of whites asking this same question every day. There are numerous ethnic groups within the white race, those ethnic groups have many different cultures and languages. So what would a "white channel" consist of? Which white ethinc group would it highlight? Would Italians be on it since some people don't feel they are white? You're just another white racist that is asking this stupid question to insult Black people. That's all you people have time for. You claim we're taking all of your jobs. Maybe if you weren't on here all day asking stupid, racist questions, you'd have more jobs!

This question gets asked at least once a day. It really should be common sense. White culture, entertainment, media is mainstream. Is it such a bad thing for a culture to want to learn about THEIR culture, and see ppl who look like them on TV in positive roles?

And why does it matter? There are also stations for hispanics, & asians & it doesn't bother me one bit. Sometimes I find myself watching the spanish channel & asian channel b/c culturally you can learn alot.

I don't hear you saying there aren't ENOUGH minorities on TV & why is that? Have you ever watched a minority based show? Have you read a book by a minority? Yet, minorities watch shows about Caucasians everyday. We learn about Caucasian history everyday. So why don't you hear any minorities complaining about that?

B/c nobody cares but ppl who have racist attitudes.

You may not be overtly racist, but you have white privilege. It is more insidious that simple name-calling and cross-burning. It means that one is in the position to overlook the "invisible" in the dominant culture, and that one assumes that their own culture is the default. It is the same way that women's sports don't get equal coverage and funds and resources as men's sports is due to male privilege.

White culture dominates just about every media type. Peruse the DVD section or any library/bookstore: Rarely any black people or other minorities except for the ones that live up to stupid stereotypes. Even in regular movies, most cast members are white, even those set in NYC! Black entertainment (or history or anything else) is marginalized by the powers in charge. People complain that whites are not longer the majority, yet everything from political representation to entertainment representation to literature assumes white is the default and is the dominant culture for everyone.

Here is a link about white privilege.

It's not just blacks. Nearly every minority in an country has do not get due presence in school curriculums and in the media.

After all, what do you know about black culture? Anything besides what you see on TV and in popular movies? Do you make judgements from afar? How involved are you with people of color in your life?

we are all suppose to be equal ..but minorities have taken the time and effort to enact special days to celebrate their ethnicity and boast the esteem of a once oppressed people.

Besides White people had exclusivity in the entertainment world for over 150 years. WET is basically every television station...remember Friends never had a black actor in the show until it was about to end or 90210 or Seinfied..blacks were few and far between.

... and pretty much hollywood is whollywood ..because directors and writers dont cast blacks or dont write parts for blacks

...inorder for a black actor to get his due there has to be a station or a black-owned studio..
to write a lead part..but then it is bascially known as a "black" movie and conservative whites dont always go for "black" movies.

the only parts that white people have for halle berry nowadays are parts that show off her body NOT her acting skills ....why couldnt they cast her in "A Mighty Heart" or "Evening" or "Signs" or "Ghost Whisperer"..point is black parts are hardly a lead ..the best Morgan Freeman can do is be someone's assistant..

Open your eyes you guys have alot of TV networks. You do have history too. In Europe Italy Germany and other places we learn in school about it. Like the journey to America, killing off most of the Native Indians, bring slaves here, and so on.

Ok I didn't really have time to find them all, but I really think you should take a look at these questions. Honestly, we get so angry because the questions are so repetitive. I understand that you may be young, and don't quite understand things about BET, NAACP, and all sorts of things. But really if you take some time to do a little research, things will really become clear to you. I want you to be aware that the White owners on BET are making money showing black folks in the usual stereotype, and the main viewers of BET are mostly white. BET has turned into a disgrace to the black community.
