More accurately the category on the USDA Pyramid is "Meat and Beans" so beans are BEANS - an alternate source of protein from meat.

Nuts are in the same group (Meat and Beans) since nuts supply essential fatty acids. EFA's are usually found in animal protein not vegetables or fruits.

Nuts and beans are NOT meat. They contain protein LIKE meat, but are not meat.

As far as classification, they are a low fat, high fiber protein source.
