I'm starting karate a week from Tuesday, is it fun?

I'm taking kempo mixed with jiu-jitsu.

It can be depending on the instructor and the school but it is also hard work and can be difficult to enjoy at times. Karate and most other martial arts were not orginally designed or intended to be fun. However with the martial arts booms of the last 30 years and taking ever younger students and looking at how it can help teach, motivate, and build young adults into better and more capable people it has been changed to make it somewhat fun and to keep them interested and motivated. I will also say anything worth having does not usually come easy or without some work. Karate is a lot like that and it will benefit you in so many ways in the future and that along with whatever fun is the real payoff.

britishcutie, im afraid it's not. karate (not tae-kwon-do, or other martial arts) is the most traditional and least flashy of all the oriental martial arts i know. the movements are short and quite boring. very unhollywood like for my taste.

you would think its useful being boring and all but youd probably be able to find street fighting or survival fighting techniques more practical.

imagine you're a charlie's angel when you start doing it and shout: "yahhh" now and then to feel some excitement =)

You should stretch a little bit before starting, even though instructors will make you stretch anyway its always a good idea to do some just before the lesson starts. Its great for stress relief.
