a coworker's sister passed away (and she is now the caretaker for her 2 children...in addition to her own 3). we're putting together a card and "collection" for her. keeping in mind i'm extremely broke, what is an ok amount to contribute withouth looking like a cheap-o or jerk??

That is something only you can answer. Extremely broke to me may mean something different than it does to you.
You need to put in as much as you can to the point that you will feel you did your best. It doesn't matter if it is $5 or $50, what counts is it is a heartfelt contribution to the best of your ability.

Contribute whatever you can. Typically, I contribute $5.

When our office does something like that we just pass around the sympathy card and an extra envelope to put your money in. No one else knows how much you put in.

In my opinion $10.00 is an ok amount to contribute.

Since everyone is contributing then I would say 5.00 is a good amount . if everyone contributes 5.00 then they should have a pretty good amount collected . good luck .
