i used a debit card to buy something online, and the next day, i got a cancellation e-mail, saying that they couldn't contact my "credit card" number. first of all, did they cancel it because i used a debit card, rather than a credit card? second of all, the money hasn't been restored on my debit card. is there anything i can do besides calling the bank to tell them about the problem?

i was supposed to wait 24-48 hours after cancelling, and the money was supposed to be refunded by then, but it's been over 72 hours now.

First, check with your bank to see if the money was debited or it's just pending. If it was debited, call the seller immediately and tell them you need to clarify whether the purchase went through or you need to provide other information. If you still want the goods, you should be fine. Call the store and check. Otherwise tell them you need a refund.

I try not to use debit cards online because they are directly linked to your checking account and I find it easier to cancel charges or demand refunds for credit on credit cards, where they will investigate the transaction.

I just ran into a similar problem, where a debit card transaction was initially declined and two minutes later, accepted.

The initial amount was "frozen" in the account and it took a trip to the bank to unfreeze it. I was told that it would normally unfreeze in 48 hours.

Of course, if overdrafts then occurred, you would have to discuss the matter with the bank to get them reversed.

As to the CC vs. debit card matter, I'm not aware of any on line issues between the two. It sounds like typical "problems."

For some strange reason, when I order from Newegg, my VISA won't work but American Express will. Go figure.

If a merchent accpets a credit card, then they will accpet a debit card as well. The only exception I know of being some car rentals.

So it has nothing to do with the fact that its a credit card. Contact your bank and find out what happend. I am sure they can give you a the reason over the phone.

If they took $$ from your account , notify them ASAP that they took the $$ then refused to send the merchandise . ( In writing AND by phone )
If they still refuse to send the merchandise , notify your bank that the merchant defaulted on sending the merchandise and you want them to reverse the debit .

I don't think you can use a debit card online.

I think you need a prepaid credit card.
