I have a long time friend I just recently found again, and he tells me he was discharged dishonorably from the marines. He told me that he was lax in his duties and late sometimes, and did not take authority well. Can you get discharged from the marines for this? Or is there something more that he is not telling me? He is such a bright individual and his life is pretty scummy right now, I'm led to believe that there is more that he is not telling me.

There are several "less than honorable" discharges available to the military. A dishonorable discharge is the worse. From what he described to you, a general discharge or possibly a bad conduct discharge might have been appropriate. But not a dishonorable discharge. There's something you're not being told.

He is probably being honest but not totally. The military gives you many chances to clean up your act and you usually have to do something pretty extreme to get dishonorable. Most discharges will either be general or other than honorable. He is holding something back but is probably just too embarrassed to tell you what.

Honestly, it's very hard to get a dishonorable discharge from the marines. Even if you were to punch a commander, you would get honorable discharge. It would have to be very serious, such as rape. I think that there is definately something that he's hiding.

I would say theres a lot more he isn't telling you. It's really not easy to get a dishonorable. You really have to screw up to get that. Could be a lot of things but he had to do something a lot worse to get a dishonorable discharge. It's also possible that he didn't really get that type. He could be looking for attention. It's weird but I have seen it.

There is definately something hes not telling... I had a friend steal credit cards from her supervisor, racked up thousands of dollars in debt on the credit card, and she get a bad conduct discharge..... And a dishonorable discharge is alot worse than a bad conduct discharge....

If I remember correctly, a dishonorable discharge is the result of a conviction by a courts-martial.

it all depends. i was in the air force, but i got honorable discharged because of my feet. late sometimes i don't think would have done it. but not taking authority well would. what were some examples by not taking authority well? if he was lashing out very bad, then yes. you should check into this more. it's very hard to get that from the marines!
