Hi everybody, I'm due on Aug.24th. There is a paternity issue that I'm sure is not one at all but this crazy ex-boyfriend (who REALLY wants this child to be his) got me second-guessing myself. Essentially, does anyone know the following answers:
1. Can the difference between a 5-6 week unltrasound and a 9-10 week ultrasound be noticed without a doubt?

2. If all my ultrasounds starting from the 10week ultrasound have coincided with my calculations in regards to conception date (give or take a few days), is it possible to actually be a month further along than I thought?

there is a significant difference between a 5-6 week ultrasound and 9-10 week ultrasound....i don't think you're a month further along....also, your uterus would be measuring bigger...doesn't your doctor put the tape measure on your belly at each visit?? that would be very accurate...relax, the baby isn't his

Why dont you just take a paternity test? and yes, there will be quite a bit of difference between a 5-6 week ultra sound compared to a 9-10 week ultra sound.
Also, your calculations could certainly be off, but now a days, doctors are pretty accurate to how far along you are based on your ultrasounds. I would get a paternity test as soon as you can after your baby is born.

A practiced ultrasound technician can easily tell the difference between a 5-6 week baby and a 9-10 week baby. There's a lot of development that happens in those weeks.

Could you be a month off? Maybe, but it's unlikely.

Okay- only a doctor will for sure know.

I had one doctor who gave me one due date- then when I switched doctors because I moved- my next doctor gave me another due date almost a month later.

If your period is at all irregular that can cause your your anticipated due date to be way off.

In regards to ultrasounds. There are major developments in a fetus between 5-6 wks and 9-10 weeks BUT I am unaware if you can see them for sure besides in length. I have pictures of my 15 week ultrasound and typically you can't tell a fetus' gender until around 20-23 weeks but mine you could. It just depends if your fetus had hit all of their milestones as stated by doctors.

My first doctor told me they judge how far along you are by your babies size early on in pregnancy. They look the length on the u.s and found it in a chart and told me "your blah blah blah weeks." My second doctor told me that isn't always accurate (with me it wasn't) I was a week early in comparision to my second due date making a whole sooner than the first. My son was huge and fully developed!

There could possibly be a chance that it is your ex-boyfriends but the only for sure way is to wait and have a paternity test (or sometimes when you see your baby it will be right there!)

Know someone that was in a similar situation. You may be able to get a DNA test through an amnio... ask your doctor if it is too late. Otherwise, get a paternity test after your child is born. You can use a generic test kit from places like Genex. It's about $150 to get the test done and it uses a cotton swab to get the DNA sample of the child and the father - hence very non-invasive.

Sorry about your situation... hang in there.

They measure the growth of your uterus and the baby and several other deciding factors to get an estimated due date. I am sorry to say , but it is possible. With my oldest son I got my first sonogram at what I was told 8 weeks, With my due date being November 16th. 2 months before he was born they changed my due date, he ended up being born January 13th, and they said he was still probably a week early. Sounds like you are going to need a paternity test to know for sure.

Your child can be farther along than you thought and your child can just be developing faster than the regular normal. Ultrasounds are not 100per % and neither are conceptions dates unless you know exactly one 100% when you conceived. I mean they tell your cycles last 28 days and we know that is not true, some longer some are shorter. They do have test for parternity now but there are risk. You are close to your date, I would wait. Just make two plans, one for if he is and one for if he isn't

They measure the fetus during an ultra sound, to find the age.

Of course they could be off a week or so, unless it is growing very large or small. There is a huge difference between a five week and a 10 week fetus.

Good luck with you situation!!!

Great question for the doctor. While you're at it, you should also ask the doctor about DNA testing for your baby when it is born. It will be important to establish paternity beyond a doubt for the purposes of child support.

The farther along you are, the more accurate the u/s. But sweetie, if you are not sure.....get a DNA test. Let the real father be the baby's dad. It is only fair to the baby and the father. You shouldn't try to fool anyone if that is what you are saying.
