I know this is a weird question but...
I have heard people mention that Harry Potter is similar to Star Wars. I am a big fan of both series and I can't find many signifigant similarities. If anyone can think of anything that these series have in common please inform me.

Both involve orphaned children raised by relatives who were born with great powers who didn't realise it and were mentored by very wise old men who died. They both get a lot of strengh from their friendships and have to fight against someone with much greater powers and experience.

Classic good v evil stories

I suppose one could draw a few parallels. In both, you have a prophecy singling out a character: the Chosen One, the Boy Who Lived. In both, the characters control a power beyond what is present the every-day world.

There is also the idea of light-dark sides. In HP, you have the Dark Wizards, Voldemort's death eaters, etc. versus the Order of the Phoenix and others like them. In Star Wars, that conflict is even more sharply defined with the Jedi versus Sith.

Other than that, I can't think of anything off-hand.

Harry Potter is a coming-of-age story and a struggle of one boy against an evil overlord. He has power of the same kind as the overlord's, but chooses to use it for good, not evil.

The original Star Wars trilogy was about Luke Skywalker. It was a coming-of-age story and a struggle of one boy against an evil overlord. He had power of the same kind as the overlord's, but chose to use it for good, not evil.

Same premise, but different setting.

They are both fiction about events of the kind that have never really taken place and could not take place in light of today's knowledge and technology. In other words, they are both unrealistic; rather they are extensions of people's imaginations into the realms of possibility, a characteristic typical of most fantasy and science fiction stories.

Only in that there are dark forces to be overcome in each.
Other than that, it is like relating apples to oranges.
