depends on how formal you are going... I would do one name per place card if you have a specific seat for them. If just a specific table you could do both on one..
very formal... Mr. & Mrs. John Doe
less formal... John & Jane Doe or John on one and Jane on other + last name

Mr. & Mrs. John Doe if you have married couples who want to sit together.
But for ones that are dating, on one card: John Buck & Jane Doe
For those not dating, single put John Buck on one card and Jane Doe on another card.
I would place it man - woman- man-woman
If you do it that way some that are single might strike up a conversation w/ someone that might turn out to be their significant other.

Well, you'll certainly need one for each of them. Having one card that says "Mr. and Mrs." won't work, since they'll each need a seat of their own.
Part of me says that LuckyPuff is right, and that it depends on the formality of the event.
Another part of me says that if I put "Mrs. John Doe" on the card for my mother, she would never find it, since she wouldn't be looking for my dad's name amongst the cards (she was given a name at birth, and is quite insistent that everyone use it).
I think it would be entirely appropriate to use "Mr. John Doe" and "Mrs. Jane Doe" for the cards.
