I dont like taking the subway because i hate when there are delays and the train is stuck underground for mins. or hours, i get a little claustrophobic.. is the metronorth a lot more comfortable and do they too get stuck in between stations? Sorry but I have to take the metronorth and this is going to be my first time.. thanks for all your help

Remember that Metro North only has limited stops in New York City-- In Manhattan it only stops in two places: Grand Central Terminal and 125th Street/Park Avenue. And MNRR trains are not as frequent as subway trains.
For getting around NYC the subway is still the best way to go, despite its shortcomings.

Metro North has 3 lines that run east of the Hudson River, the Harlem, the Hudson and the New Haven. They all run into NYC with 2 stops in Manhattan at 125th and Grand Central. There are also stops in the Bronx as well. It is more comfortable than the subway. You can check out their website for more information. Also, it is better to buy you ticket at the station or at the ticket machine rather than on the train where they will tack on a surcharge fee above the ticket price. If you are commuting 5 days a week you can purchase a monthly pass at the station or ticket machines.

M-N trains sometimes do get delayed between stations, but in my experience this is not too common.
If M-N and subway are both viable routes for your trip (not all serve the same points), then consider M-N is more comfortable, but will cost more. M-N is basically only underground from Harlem to Grand Central.
You may want to consider buses, also. MTA runs buses, and there are also some private commuter bus lines that might serve your area, and may be faster (but more expensive).

The Metro North doesn't go to all the places in the city the subway does, so it depends on where you are coming from and where your going to, as far as being stuck underground, the metro north mostly runs above ground not below

Metro North is also more expensive than the subway and there is no free transfer to/from a bus (if you need one).
