I haven't been to a many lake resorts. But I can tell you where people used to book a lot of the time when I worked for a nationwide hotel chain.
Lake George, NY (east coast)
Lake Tahoe, CA (west coast)
My personal favorite though......(see link)
Konocti Harbor resort & spa (close to Clear Lake and little jaunt over to Shasta Lake- go see the caverns). Outdoor amphitheater with great concerts, water sports, spa
07/27 Aerosmith
07/28 Bob Dylan

That depends on what you are looking for, but some of the best are:
Lake Tahoe - Nevada/Calif
Lake Geneva - Wisconsin
Lake Minnetonka - Minnesota
Any of the lakes near Brainerd, Minnesota
Lake Coeur d'Alene - Idaho
Any of the northern Wisconsin Lakes
Table Rock Lake - Branson, Missouri
All of these for beauty, not too crowded, good fishing, good boating, swimming, skiing.

Lake Tahoe, Nv/Ca. It's so gorgeous, clear, and huge. It's not just sand either.. it's mainly pine trees. There's so much to do too and so many different beaches. My favorite is Zephyr Cove because the cabins are so cute and they're right next to the beach.
