Thanks to all of you who answered sincerely--I thought FSM was a creation of one of our older regulars. Pretty 'creative' concept.

"The Flying Spaghetti Monster is the deity of a parody religion called the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.[1] The religion was founded in 2005 by Oregon State University physics graduate Bobby Henderson to protest against the decision by the Kansas State Board of Education to require the teaching of intelligent design as an alternative to biological evolution. In an open letter sent to the education board, Henderson professes belief in a supernatural Creator called the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or Spaghedeity, which resembles spaghetti and meatballs.[2] He furthermore calls for the "Pastafarian" (a portmanteau of pasta and Rastafarian) theory of creation to be taught in science classrooms.[3]

Due to its recent popularity and media exposure, the Flying Spaghetti Monster is used by atheists and agnostics (known by Pastafarians as "spagnostics") as a modern version of Russell's teapot.[4]"

I think it was a college grad student in Oregon, who was protesting Kansas's act to force the teaching of Creationism in schools. So he invented the FSM who created mountains, trees and midgets and presented it as HIS Creationist Theory.

The concept has since caught on like wildfire among the Atheist community.

I once saw a book about the FSM in the comedy section of the bookstore. I assume that's how it originated.

It was originally created in response to the proposed teaching of creationism in school. Have a look at the website. Its very amusing.
