the people who ask that question usually do something about their driving.

ROSPA advanced driving is brilliant, not only improves your road skills, but will lower your insurance premiums. Downside, you are more likely to get irritated by other drivers.

But I think there should be changes.

Currently you need to be retested when you get to your seventies, however, I've been driving thirteen years and I know I have some terrible habits (namely impatience with certain drivers). I would advocate a refresher course every ten to fifteen years as a requirement to holding onto your licence.

I think that everyone should be required to learn some basic mechanics, not so much so they can fix a broken down vehicle but so that they can recognise a problem in the making. (I have discussed this with friends, and am currently looking for a suitable course for myself).

I think accident avoidance skills should be part of all training i.e. skid pans, recovering your road line and getting safely to the side of the road with a flat tyre, winter driving (I live in Germany, with very cold winters, this is essential here, but British winters are getting worse too and you don't use winter grade tyres there).

What would be useful for some drivers would be to take a journey as a cyclist or biker in a busy area, to learn how it feels to be on the other side of the argument.

I'm generally safe but last year I did the most stupid thiong I have ever done on the road or anywhere. I break out into a cold sweat when I think of it. The life of me and my family was saved by the quick thinking of at least two other drivers and we all got away with it. I did not deserve to and had the police been there I would have deserved being banned

I don't class myself as a brilliant driver, i'm still learning, and i've been driving for 30 years.

Some of us do, and take the advanced driving test. It makes for safer driving whilst making good progress. Part of taking this test is to instill a permanent state of self-critique. twenty years after taking that test I have more confidence in my driving AND I am still always looking at ways to improve.

They go & take bike lessons - really opens your eyes to bad driving and just makes you FAR more aware!
Definitely think there should be a mandatory re-take of the test every few years though to encourage people to keep up their skills!
