I just got a kitten from the pet store last night. Very sweet and loves to purr. It is timid and when I held it at the pet store it stayed all curled up in my arms and let me hold and pet it just fine. Later last night I noticed that it's tail is broken in 2 spots and it just does not want to wander around much. I do have 3 other cats and they seem to be fiarly cool with the new addition so far. Every time I go to pet him he cowers a bit too. I have to wonder if he was abused.

Any suggestions to get him to break out of his little shell...I know time is part of it.

Only time will heal him/her. You can't push it because then it will just get worse. You just have to make sure the cat knows that you are not going to hurt it. Thats the only thing you really can do

If the kitten's tail is broken in two spots, it needs to have medical attention from the veterinarian. Take the kitten to the veterinarian and get professional advice. He is probably, in pain if he is cowering when touched. If he was abused, there is nothing you can do about that now except provide this kitten with the best care and kindness you can give. However, if you just acquired the animal last night, that should have been the responsibility of the pet store to provide you with a healthy kitten or at least to inform you of any known and curable health problem that kitten had before they sold it to you. If the problem diagnosed is not curable, you should report it to the store where you purchased the kitten, keep all of the receipts and report the store to your local ASPCA and demand a refund of the sale price, but also demand humane treatment of the little, helpless kitten. Best wishes.

First night home, I'd expect a kitten to be shy and behave the way you are describing. Give it time - it will come out of its shell on its own.

Have the vet look at the tail. If it is broken, you might discuss a refund from the pet store. Up to you if you want to keep the kitten in spite of the breaks or not. Little kitten tails can get broken easily, may not necessarily be abuse.

You're right. Time is a huge factor. I adopted a kitten a few weeks ago and she would stay in the closet for hours on end and not come out. Now, she runs the house. lol.
Sounds to me like the kitty was mistreated. Just make sure to keep your voice low around him and if you are able to pet him a little, speak to him or make little happy noises. When you think about it, humans can be intimidating to cats just based on height. You might want to try and get on his level and make eye contact with him. Try to play with him or at least show him that he has toys and things to do.
Good luck!

you should take your cat to your vet because they will be able to notice signs of abuse
