They should apply for legal status, or else go into hiding like a lot of them do. If & when you are caught, you can be deported.

They should make arrangements to return as soon as possible; otherwise it is only a matter of time before they are caught, detained, and removed, and it will then be difficult to get another visa in future. If they return of their own accord, the chances are that no-one will realise that they overstayed, and they would have a better chance of geting a visa to return in future. If they think they might have special grounds for remaining, eg (very!) long residence, or graounds for an asylum claim, they should get legal advice as soon as possible.

The question is, why did you overstay your visa. Did you simply forget or did you know it had expired and deliberately stayed on without trying to renew it. What nationality are you? Go to the relevant Embassy and they will probably help you.

I would say be very careful, you could be targeted for assassination as was Jean Charles DeMenenzes in a bungled met police anti-terrorist investigation, who then embarked on a cover-up. His death was no tragic accident, it was a down to a gungho cavalier police hit squad.
Don't overstay a visa as it could prove to be dangerous to health, even terminal.

My son's girlfriend overstayed and went home to her country a bit later. She was refused a second visa because of her overstay.

you are illegal in the country. My advice is to phone the local airport and ask them if you can pay a fine and go back to your country, you dont have to give your name if you dont want too.

They need to go home to their own country real quick or get banged up in a detention centre. Those places are worse than hell.

They could be in big trouble and will be asked to leave the country, especially if they are from a country where we get a lot of economic immigrants...

It depends on where they would be from.
If they are from a poor country, I would understand why they are trying to stay here, but if they are from Canada, Europe or Japan, I would say they are crazy because their quality of life is about to go down.
