I have a 91 Nissan 300zx 2+2 that has a value of about 6,000 but there are more expensive ones out there that are all fixed up. There are very sporty cars that get second looks by people. I wouldn't trade Z in for anything

A good Acura Integra would be a nice choice. Sporty, still looks current in styling (for the most part). Has a good tuner reputation, Honda quality.

You could get a Mazda MX 5 (go for the 1.8, more fun than the 1.6) for that kind of money now.
Maybe an MG TF or an older Peugeot 206 GTi

VW Golf GTi or Tdi is what I'd opt for with £8000 .... you could pick up a decent one on a 52/03 plate and they'll always hold their value.

Porsche 911. You could get a 1990 model for that much if you hunt around.

The best 'sporty car' for under 8k would be a BMW M3 evolution (e36)...............You couldn't do better than that for the money :)
