I have a 91 Nissan 300zx 2+2 that has a value of about 6,000 but there are more expensive ones out there that are all fixed up. There are very sporty cars that get second looks by people. I wouldn't trade Z in for anything

VW Golf GTi or Tdi is what I'd opt for with £8000 .... you could pick up a decent one on a 52/03 plate and they'll always hold their value.

The best 'sporty car' for under 8k would be a BMW M3 evolution (e36)...............You couldn't do better than that for the money :)
