You've seriously got to be kidding me. Judging from the answers I got about my recent question about tongues, I have pretty much decided that is ridiculous and fabricated. Who agrees?

Hi -

I do not agree.

There are many different Spiritual Gifts that are given by God to believers in order to serve Him.

If you are ever interested in seriously studying the Bible and specifically passages about Spiritual gifts, feel free to email me.

Here is a partial list of Spiritual gifts:
teaching
hospitality
prophecy
healing
giving
administration
works
and of course tongues

Now would it seem strange to you for someone to heal, or to speak a prophetic word? Some church denominations have
singled out speaking in tongues as something that could be learned and must be done by all. THAT is ridiculous and un-biblical. However, there are some with that gift.

God created the universe and everything in it. He scattered the people at Babel and confused their language. He certainly can give someone the gift of speaking in tongues if He so desires.

Like I said, Spiritual Gifts are something that you can educate yourself about, the Bible has the information you are looking for.

Regarding denouncing any particular belief - know that all of the Biblical prophecy that has been fufilled to date has been 100 % accurate. As an educated person, that should mean a great deal to you.

I used to work with a Church Of God weirdo that said something hilarious to me one day.

He said "There was some little 8 year old kid in there speaking in tongues, and I mean, I can understand if the lord and the spirit moves you, but this kid was just faking the whole thing..."

I busted out laughing, much to his chagrine. And trying not to be too rude, I just said, "Okay, you're not afraid to say that this 8 year old kid was faking it, but that thought doesn't cross your mind when the adults do it?"

(This guy's brain was permanently warped by crack cocaine and jail time, anyway. But he's a good example of the type)

And for the record, anyone that believes speaking in tongues is real, I'm sorry, but you are incredibly dense. ANYONE can fake that. In fact, I guarantee you I could fake it better than most of them. I've seen these fools. What they call speaking in tongues is actually just rapidly repeating the same consonants over and over again until their brain manages to latch onto another one. Just listen to them sometime. They will repeat 2 or 3 sounds over and over again, and then switch to a different set. Multitasking and trying to come up with something new to say at random is very difficult for the weak-minded. And uh... that's who we're dealing with here.

No me, I totally disagree with you... Speaking in tongues is not fabricated, nor was it just for the apostles. I will agree that everyone that speaks in tongues are not of God, some people "speak in tongues" just for the attention. If a person does that, then the Lord will deal with them about that, but don't just all who speak in tongues as all being fake and fabricated, because that is very far from the truth... I am Pentecostal and I know speaking in tongues is very real and very much alive today.

I agree. The word "tongues" refers to understandable languages, see Acts 2. This was a gift in the first century church that ceased when the Bible was completed and the apostles, who alone had the power to impart miraculous gifts by the laying on of their hands, died.

Languages are not gibberish and as a matter of fact, speaking in "gibberish" could very well be cursing God in a satanic tongue.

The biggest problem with "Speaking In Tongues" is that many churches claim you are not "Saved/Born Again" until you do speak in tongues. Or church membership is refused until you do speak in tongues.

That is the true heresy behind the entire bad exegesis of the scripture in Acts 2

Saved by grace through faith only!

I have seen this happen once in a church. I have my doubts, but recently, I saw a news story on it, and it was fascinating. They tested people while speaking in tongues, and while praying, and just normal, and there was a noticeable difference in their brain activity! What this shows is that it does come from a different part of the brain, and that people are actually experiencing a different state of mind. Perhaps this is the beginnings of being able to scientifically document a connection with the divine... Of course science can't say whether it comes from God or not (we don't have the technology for that yet.), but I thought it was really interesting that it was a different kind of brain activity. After all, we already know that we use only a tiny portion of our brains. Who knows what the rest of it is for?

Well the mention in the bible concerning speaking in tounges concerned prophets addressing a group of people of mixed nationalities who all heard and understood what they said in their own language. The denominations and sects who do it today are just saying nonsense words. There is a very interesting example in the documentary Jesus camp were the pentecostal camp leader teaches the children to speak in tounges.

It's ignorant of anyone who has never experienced it to ridicule it or condemn it as not being of God. I received the gift of tongues in a field near my house while I was in deep anguish of heart in prayer. It was God's way of letting me know He was with me and that I had the Holy Spirit in me to strengthen me. Paul says not everyone speaks with tongues and that God gives us all different gifts. Paul makes many references to it in his letter and it is not as some above have said a man made language. Paul says it is an unknown language and a language of angels. The people who heard the early apostles speaking in tongues at pentacost heard their own language but the apostles didn't know how to speak their languages. They weren't speaking foreign languages, they were speaking an unknown language that God was controlling and God enabled who He willed to understand it. Notice some did and some scoffed saying they were drunk. Don't be a scoffer. You have never spoken in tongues.

It has been a point of debate for years. That is true.

The Bible says it HAS to be a legitimate language, one that can be translated by someone who knows that language and that language can't be known to the speaker.

That is the proof then.

If you can take record the speaking of tounges and play it for linguists who can identify it as a legitimate language and tell you what is being said, then it could be legitimate.

The SCRIPTURES say this is how it is to be done.

The SCRIPTURES say it is to basically be AUTHENTICATED

YOu have to have a translator present.
