I may not know all the regulations of federal elections....why is it that there is always such a shortage of voters at all the national elections....sometimes it's enough to make me think that there are just too many that are selfish and don't give a hoot as to where this country is going with its current leaders...someday it will be too late I tend to think sometimes. Don't you agree?

I will admit that there are good points being made against the "forcing" of making people vote as a wrong. But in the light of this topic what is it we can do as a society to get people to understand the country is now being ran by the gov't more than it is the people who invest into it? Doesn't this country deserve to have a better future than what it looks like now? (we've outsourced jobs, become too politically correct, economy is a little destructive, we now have several countries that are now hating us, lowered values in morales, become too much a police state, I could go on and on).

All Americans need to remember the words by JF Kennedy...
"Ask not what your country can do for you...but what you can do for your country."

Too Bad that there are too many Americans that can't or will give a darn about the future....we used to be the best country in the world as far as the people...

Though you can't really force all to vote, but you can try and get all to realize we need our country back from the control freaks at Capitol Hill....I think 2008 election will be enough of a stirrup and there just might be more awaken Americans by then.... I certainly do hope so. Wake up AMERICA!

It's easy to think that and well, many politicians are so detached from the people that they supposedly represent, that I think many voters look at the candidate choices they are faced with and think, "why bother? neither of these ***holes care about my life."
and it shouldn't be made a law to vote, we have a right to vote just as we have a right to abstain from voting, but the truth of it, if you ask me, is that voting is a pain in the butt for the average person who has to work on a Tuesday. It's just not accessible...some people would have to take time off from work to make it to a poll and a lot of people can't afford to take that time off, or they may not have the transportation to get there. If they want a better voter turn out, make it a paid holiday and provide bussing to the polls.

No, there are too many ignorant people voting as it is - better to not let people vote in a national election unless they've voted in at least two of the local elections in the last couple years.

The hundreds of millions of dollars being spent by national candidates are aimed at these ignorant voters who can be swayed by a well presented political ad that may have nothing to do with honesty or reality.

No - we have too many stupid laws already. Give people something to vote for and they will come. We have so much dirty politics and un-distinguishable candidates that people just don't care. Put "none of the above" on each line of the ballot and people have at least a motive to vote. If that wins, maybe politics will get a kick in the butt and change.

Personally, I'd prefer that fewer people voted. If people are not intelligent enough to know who the candidates are and why their vote is going to be a good vote, they should not vote.

Of course, if everybody did that, we'd probably have about 1% of the population voting.

Ideally, I'd actually like to eliminate voting and the whole government, as governments have been creating more violence than they prevents and reducing economic growth more than they increase it since the beginning of history. We'd be much better off in a pure Free Market society where we hire businesses to perform the services that are actually useful which are currently performed by governments (we'd save alot of money, as most of the money governments steal through taxation is wasted on killing people and destroying property).

If a person decides to give up their right to choose their leader, then that is their fault. However, I don't think that we should start making people vote. Forcing people to do anything in this country can be very dangerous.

Yes, I think it should be a law that everyone vote. Those who don't vote should be fined.. and not able to collect or benefit from any government policies until the next election.

It is unbelievable to me, how many people just don't bother.. they should shut the hell up if they can't even go out one day and vote. It is our right as citizens and one that is most important.

When you don't vote.. we end up with irresponsible government like the one we have now. i can tell you, this next election better be the biggest turnout ever and clean house. It is time Americans woke up and started caring about their country and not just their own little back yard.

It's sad that some people don't seem to care enough to educate themselves about the issues and the candidates, yes.

But if they're not going to educate themselves, then I certainly don't want them to vote. And you can't require people to think. So, I'd rather have them stay home and let the decisions be made by those of us who care.

I always vote and I believe it is important for people to vote, However, I do not believe people should be forced to vote. It would only make people rebel and maybe even vote for bad laws, regulations and candidates if they were forced to vote against their will.

Only a thug dictator like Hugo Chavez would require everyone to vote. Choosing not to vote may be irresponsible, but a non-vote is a vote in and of itself.
