The very best thing your neighbor could do for the injured bird is to contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator immediately, while there is still a chance for the bird to be helped. You can find one here: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contact.htm
These people have the training and the resources to care for sick, injured and orphaned wild animals. They also have the necessary permits. In the US, Canada, and many other countries, it is illegal to keep native wild species unless you have a license.
Also, unless your neighbor has the proper training, she can do more harm than good. I like the way this website explains it: "First of all, there are federal and state laws that prohibit keeping wild birds. And there are so many important but subtle elements to raising a wild bird that the job is only legally entrusted to licensed rehabilitators. Many well-meaning people raise baby birds or rescue birds from cats or after accidents, and sometimes they don't realize that the bird in their care is suffering from a serious dietary deficiency. Some of the problems aren't apparent to untrained people, but can cause death, or make the bird less likely to evade predators or to survive harsh natural weather conditions."

Does she know what kind of injury might be? If it's something serious like broken neck, then there is really nothing to do there. But if it's a broken wing or leg, she should put a stick and wrap it around it and then eventually it will get better. I found a little bird once, and since I had no idea where to find worms (that was what I thought little birds eat) I started killing flies. The bird loved them, eventually he grew up and started eating bird food. He never wanted to go back to freedom. I tried to open his cage and let him free but he flew out and on my shoulder. So, I guess that was his decision!

It is very hard to care for injured birds. A vet will not usually charge ( at least they never have me) what they do is take in the bird, or other animal and call the proper people to take it there is usually animal refuge people that take abandoned sick and hurt animals and know how to care for them...

Call your local wildlife sanctuary and see if there are any animal rehabilitators in your area. They specialize in this kind of thing. An injured bird is difficult and stresses easily.
