it would be more helpful if you added more info to your question. but basically, tell the customers that you have an appointment after you meet with them so its important they show up on time in order for you to give them your full attention and time.

Well it depends on what type of business you have. Post a sign for hours. I know some people to post it for like 5:00 and note that the last appt. is at 4:40. Maybe that will help?

Are these customers with appointments who are late? Or do they come to your establishment after closing hours expecting help? Tell us what type of business you have and someone will be able to give you some advice.

If it's for an appointment, ask them if another time would work better for them. If it's just business hours - post them at the door, and if it's something that needs a "last call" (like a laundromat) post the "LAST CALL" time....

Just explain to them that you have an appointment immediately after them and so you can't afford for them to be late because otherwise you could lose business. If they are as nice as you say they are the last thing they would want is for you to lose business.

make them wait, tell them since they are late you are involved with something else. Make them wait at least 10-15 minutes maybe then they will get the hint

If anything .fool them into thinking its actually an hour or two earlier than what you really want them there for. That way they will show up on time if there always late. It worked for my aunt and uncle . ie if i wanted them there at 3pm i would tell them to be here for 1pm SO when they showed up at 3pm they were on time LOL. option 2

take a deposit for bookings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
