Just a simple thank you works. There is no need in saying anything else. Most people say this because there are few words to express how they feel when someone dies.

If they're giving you their condolences for your loss, the only thing you really can say is thank you. They know that nothing they say will make you feel better, but we all feel compelled to say something. Just thank them for their support and tell them how much it means to you that they're there for you.

Depends on who died and the circumstances. If it is a relative who has been sick for a very long time and we knew death was coming i will explain this to them that it was no suprise - that we were prepared for it and tell them its kind of a relief that they are not suffering anymore.

"Thank you" will suffice. No one really knows what to say to actually help (not that anything does), so the best thing to do is keep it simple.
