Ah, that old passive/aggressive bipolar deity! You gotta love him!
Does this guy above me sound like one of those abused women who tells her friends "It's my fault, it's my fault, I just seem to irritate him and he gets into a rage." Therapy all round, I think!

The church really screws up every time they dumb things down for some group or another.
Lets get a few things straight:
Hell: Nowhere in the bible is the word hell used by the original writers. In the old testament, every place you see the word "hell" the original writers used words meaning "death," "The pit," or "Sheol." (Sheol means grave, but seems to have additional significance.) In most cases, the old testament mentions "Sheol" in connection with "the depths of the pit." and passing through water.
In the new testament, "Hell" is used in place of the original words Sheol, Hades, Tartarus, and Gehenna. Sheol, I've discussed earlier. It appears to be a Hebrew concept for the underworld, one where everyone goes at death, although the depths of the pit may be a more exclusive area for bad folks.
Hades is the greek concept for the underworld. Like the hebrews, they thought of it as a shadowy, and less pleasant place where all dead souls went... and from which some returned after a long time, and severe memory loss. jesus speaks of an entire city going down to hades.
Tartarus is a special part of hades, where the greek titans, and other heinous criminals were sent after death. It was deeper than the rest.
Gehenna is a valley between Jerusalem and the Mount of Olives. It gets it's name from a man who had no children. A city was there at some point, Solomon built all the temples to the gods of his many wives in this valley. Eventually, the city caught a plague, and was burnt. From then on, the area became a trash dump and incinerator. Most often, discussions of genenna are connected to people sinning sexually. This is the area where "the worm dieth not, and the smoke of the flames goes up forever." But while the fires are always going, the people who are taken there do not necessarily burn in agony forever.
Souls: I find no evidence to assert that human souls are naturally immortal. Indeed, many passages in the new testament discussing Eternal life hinge on the fact that you must be a Christian for eternal life, suggesting that those who die in sin simply die.
It's still a pretty stiff claim, "Love me or you'll die." but this idea of constant torture really has no place in Christianity.

If you really read the Bible then you will not be "tortured" forever. The fire is eternal but your soul is not burned forever. At the second coming the righteous are resurrected and go to Heaven, true believers go to Heaven and the wicked die. They will lay in there graves for 1000 years, as Satan walks the Earth, until the third coming and then the wicked will be resurrected and judged and if there name is not in the "Book of Life", showing they can still repent and go to Heaven, they will be thrown into the "Lake of Fire" along with Satan, Satan's angels and the false prophets. With this Satan will start Armageddon with his angels and those humans who feel betrayed by God. They will be destroyed by fire sent from the Heavens. But it states the righteous will be in the fire also but will not be destroyed by it, meaning the wicked would still have another chance to repent. With this God will throw them all into the "Lake of Fire". However it states that the righteous will walk on the ashes of the wicked when God takes over the new Earth and all things become new. Ashes are no longer burning, so you will not suffer forever. Just cease to be, body and soul.
"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away."

Yes, it would be. Unfortunately, so many claiming to be Christians teach this, despite the clear testimony of the scriptures to the direct opposite. Read just one scripture of many such:
------------------
Job 3:13-18, For now I should have lain down and been quiet. I should have slept. Then I would have been at rest 14with kings and counselors of the earth, who built waste places for themselves, 15or with rulers who had gold, who filled their houses with silver. 16Or I should have been as a hidden untimely birth, as infants that never saw light. 17There the wicked cease from troubling, and there the weary are at rest. 18There the prisoners are at ease together. They do not hear the voice of the taskmaster (ACV)
-----------------
What did God tell Adam was his punishment? - to dust you shall return.
What does Ezekiel say would happen to the sinning soul? die!
What does Rom 6:23 say is the price of sin? death!
What does Rom 6:7 happens to sin at death? nullified!

Black mail? When you were four years old and you wanted to candy for the rest of your life, what would a good parent have done? When you are 15 and you want to drink and smoke and party, what would a mature adult do? There is someone always wiser than you. A parent might seem unfair at four. A 25 year old who is responsible might not seems like a fun person. It is your point of view. I think you are wise to ask but even more wiser if you looked at God's point of view. If you love someone you found your inner peace. If you can't love someone you are tormented for all eternity. That's all that it means. No one is going to torture you. You torture yourself by not finding yourself.

What if you were on a boat about to go off the edge of a waterfall and splatter yourself on the rocks below and someone throws you a rope and says, I love you, grab the rope, do what I say, just grab it. And then the person in the boat folds their arms and goes, what? Stop telling me what to do, this is MY boat, I don't even believe there IS a waterfall ahead anyway. Is the person on the edge right to tell you to grab the rope so that you can be saved? Or is the stubborn, prideful wretch in the boat right?

Your implication, of course, is the God of the Bible, and it is completely wrong. The mess of humankind is humankind's fault, not God's. God has provided the way of escape through his Son, Jesus, but you refuse to accept His course of action. Hell was not created for people, but for Satan and his demonic followers who rebelled against God. The fact that many humans will arrive there is really their choice. God begged them to come to faith and accept his solution, but they considered it so much nonsense. You do too. That makes two mistakes on your part: You blame God for being a mean old man, and you reject his offer of true freedom. By the way, ask yourself this question: Is Hell locked from the outside or the inside? Good news for you. It's not too late. Why not explore Christianity from a fresh perspective. Read "Mere Christianity" by C.S. Lewis (the author of The Chronicles of Narnia). It is a great argument against atheism, for God; and provides a highly readable description of the beliefs and attitudes of classical Christianity. Your question proves you're an intelligent person. You'll enjoy it.
