Working out really is worth it, yes, for a whole lot of reasons, not the least of which is weight loss.

We tend not to think of our bodies as machines, but that is indeed what they are: intricate, complex, marvelous machines. As with any machine, fail to provide adequate use and maintenance and it will ultimately break. Engines need to be run to remain in good working order. Have you ever heard the expression "use it or lose it"? Our muscles need to be worked to be kept in good shape. I'm not talking about being a musclehead, merely being able to open a jar of pickles, or regain one's balance on a slippery staircase, or be able to endure a lengthy illness with minimal consequences. If you don't give your muscles something to do, they atrophy, lose their strength and become fragile, susceptible to injury. Therefore even the most basic of workouts has benefits for the body.

In addition to improving overall bloodflow and circulation, strengthening and tightening muscles and decreasing fat deposits, regluar, moderate workouts can also improve digestion, relieve stress, increase lung capacity, extend endurance, clarify thinking and generally contribute to overall physical fitness. We often tend to think of exercise or workouts strictly in terms of biomechanics, overlooking the other, equally important benefits to the circulatory, digestive and even reproductive systems of the body. Lower your cholesterol, lower your blood pressure, increase your ability to oxygenate your blood stream and, of course, poop better. Who wouldn't want that?

Sure, it's so much easier to just not work out, but to what consequence? A workout doesn't have to be drudgery: find something you like to do, something basic and go from there. Even taking a brisk walk with hand weights will incorporate all your major muscle groups and you'll get more benefit than if you were at home piloting your recliner. My favorite workout activity is rowing, inside during the winter, or cycling outside in the warmer months. While cycling does not utilize all the major muscle groups, it is great for the lower body and tremendous for the heart and lungs. You don't have to try to be Lance Armstrong - an easy ride is still a good and beneficial ride.

I should say that I've been quite a lounge-chair lizard throughout my life and only in recent years have I made a concerted effort to get myself into something approaching decent shape. Since 2003, I have lost and kept off 80 lbs, slowly, steadily and without feeling deprived, punished or cheated out of anything. A lot of that is due to the food choices I've made but no small measure of that progress is due to exercise. My workouts are temperate, last about half an hour and have lowered my triglycerides and bad cholesterol to levels I haven't seen in 15 years. A little effort can go a very long way if you're willing to make small changes in your life. Get up, go outside and take a walk - you might be surprised at how good it really feels.

yes definitely worth it i'm 52 and feel very strong and could lose a few more pounds but i still work two jobs and just lift a few weights in the morning and get on the wxercise ball or my total gym or ab doer for a few minutes to help loosen things up a bit. i have alwasy mainly worked on my arm strength for my job and my part time job is at home depot where in the lumber department it can get very physical. working out will keep yopu feeling strong and your body toned to be able to handle lifes everyday tasks alot easier like maybe carrying the groceries in even. things are alot heavier for me but the working out helps alot and i do better than alot of 20 year olds still--good luck and if even an exercise band just try it out for a week to see how you feel.

Working out IS worth it. It makes you feel more confident, keeps your heart working properly, maintains a healthy body fat percentage, and can increase your lifespan. I know it's hard (trust me), but little steps, like not looking for a parking space right up front, taking the stairs as opposed to the escalator or elevator, and walking, as well as getting at east 20 minutes of cardio a day, can make a big difference over time.

Yes, working out is important. Each type of work out (aerobic vs. toning/building muscles) has its advantages. Your heart needs 20 minutes at least three times a week to stay healthy (i.e., walking/running/cycling/etc.) The toning/building is important in keeping your muscles tone.

Also, the endorphins that your brain releases after a workout is great. You are on a natural high. In the long run, your body will be in good shape and you'll be happier.

Those are pretty good reasons to stay in shape, don't you think?

yes it is worth it. although it is easier to not work out, in the end, the effect working out has on your body is awesome. i don't know about you, but feeling sore after a very good workout gives me a different feelin than the very usual no feeling at all. Thats one positive thing about working out. Of course, you know the other positive effects, health, energy, looks, blah, blah, blah...

I'm pretty sure that you're just frustrated that you haven't noticed any immediate results. Its takes time to get that six pack or thick arms or whatever. After a few months you'll be so happy that you weren't lazy. Be patient and you will get results.
