I..um..formatted my hard drive in a moment of madness. I used the 'quick' format option which I believe leaves most of the files intact and I havent accessed that drive since. Does anyone know of a program, preferably free, that will undelete my lost files. One was a spreadsheet which is nearly impossible to recreate. Ok I've learned my lesson about backing up. Many thanks.

Since it was a "quick format", you should be able to recover it. You will need a "file recovery" or "undelete" programs (go to http:\\download.com and search, they have several free ones).
Since the hard drive no longer has Windows (or anything) on it, you will have to place it into another computer as a second hard drive, install the recovery software on the second computer, and then let it scan the formtted drive.
Be warned that an undeleter can take hours (even days) to recover a hard drive. So be prepared to start it running and check back several hours later.

you CAN undelete files after a format (i have done it) as long as its a quick format and even if its not i would give it a try
i recommend "active @ undelete" thats what i use
******IMPORTANT***********
make sure you don't undelete to the same disk or you will overwrite other information
if it is that important and you can't recover it you can get it done by a professional but this is $1000+

Undeleter programs will recover any undamaged files... and make a stab at recovering damaged files.
Commercial or shareware undeleters exist.
BUT
if you had a lot of stuff on the disk, you will have a lot to wade through to identify everything.

It's actually very simple to recover your files after you have quick formatted your hard drive. I used a program to recover my files, I think it was called Easy Recovery or something and it recovered most of my files, but not absolutely everything.

Nope you will not be able to get those files back that easily if you formatted it. It requires special software and hardware and even if you get that the chances are most of the files are already corrupted and will not be viewable

Apparently Testdisk can recover from a formatted disk.

Once you format then they are gone.....but im sure there is some huge expensive program or service who can get them back....but expect to pay.

I could be wrong, but you cant undo a format.... your stuff is gone...
