for the past 2 years, my cat has been carrying socks, or anything small like socks around the house, in her mouth, yelping the same way that most cats do when they are in heat.

she will start out in the back of the house, and work her way, meowing the entire time, untill she sees people, and they respond to her.

i was wondering if anyone has had this happen to them, or if they know what could be causing it. she is 17 years old, and loved very much, i'm not sure if she is just craving attention or what...

thanks in advance!

Cats are natural hunters and seek prey to the point where a cat kept indoors (and it is safer to keep your cat indoors at any age) may even show "vacuum activity". That means they will imitate the hunt and the chase even in the absence of prey. If your cat has not been spayed, it is possible that the cat could still experience "heat" even at that age. If the cat has been spayed or neutered, that type of noise making is done simply to get your attention to the cats successful nabbing of the sock (the perceived prey). It could be that your cat has learned a creative way to get your attention or even has become a bit inaccurate in her perception (thinking the sock is prey) due to advanced age. Some cats may yowl when they feel nauseated. If you are even slightly, concerned that there may be a health reason for the yowling, it is best to err on the side of safety and get your cat to a veterinarian to be checked for any illnesses or age related abnormalities in order to RULE THEM OUT. Best wishes.

I'm guessing she has been spayed, and has not recently given up any kittens. Some cats like to use objects like that when they're pretending to catch prey. Some cats do weird things in order to tell their owner something is wrong with them. Good luck, somethings going on.

Has she been fixed? If she hasn't this may be a sign of endometriosis -- cats get it too.

I would talk to the vet about it. It could, however, also be senility at this age. Call the vet and if they don't think she should come in they will likely let you know.

She is old. I don't think there is anything really wrong with her, other than she is playing with socks and carrying them around like they're kittens. But if you're really worried, take her for a check-up.

Something is bothering her, and she is acting out to try to cope with it.

You said she's old. She may be feeling some old age (arthritis?) that she doesn't know what to do. (Maybe it's kitty menopause?)

Talk to a vet to be sure nothing physical is wrong.
