I just fix my new ceiling fan using 5 speed rotary switch. I have no idea why the fan and the speed controller are heating up. The heat after keeping the fan on for half an hour seems like it can melt the plastic cover of the speed controller....please give some hints...am using 220v domestic line.

I thought ceiling fans had built in speed control. I know my ceiling fans have a 3 speed capability with just the switch on the fan. Each pull of the chain switches to the next speed in the sequence that goes from high speed to medium to low to off and back to high speed again. I would think an external speed control would not be compatible.

Is the fan rated for 220V or a lower voltage? That could be the problem. If the connections at the speed controller are loose and not connected well, that can also generate excessive heat. The most likely problem is that the rotary switch is not of a high enough wattage rating to control this particular fan. That requires buying a more expensive control switch with a wattage rating that is equal to or greater than the rating of the fan at full power.
