First of all you have to register for a USGA handicap card at your country club or local golf course. Then you have to play a minimum of 10 rounds of golf and enter each score into the computer. The computer then uses a mathematical formula to calculate your handicap. As a rule of thumb, if you're thinking about playing in some club tournaments and need a handicap in order to play....Please post the correct scores and don't try to get a lower handicap than you would normally get. It's not fair to the other players who are expecting you to play to a certain level and then you cannot . This goes both ways too.....If you're a pretty good player please don't put in higher scores than what you shoot to boost your handicap up...this is called "Sand-bagging" and those golfers who play by the rules/etiquette of golf hate people who do this...So be honest and play well...

from what i understand, you have to play a minimum of 10 rounds at a golf course, record the scores and get the average score(over or under par). for example, if i shoot +5 for 10 rounds, my handicap would be 5.

Its a complicated formula that uses the 10 lowest of your last 20 scores and figures them, after accounting for the slope and course rating of the course you got them on, and then averages them out to figure out what is called your "index". You then use your index and put that into the slope/rating chart of the course you are going to play and that gives you your handicap for that course.

This is one of the most asked questions in the Golf section, so you'd be better off doing a search than asking such a frequently repeated question. See the link below.
