I have a 02 with the V6 4x4 SE that as of this morning when I got to work had 134,659K on it. I've been thru 1 set of brakes.. 1 timing belt.. 1 water pump .. and 1 A/C line (not the compressor just a line). Granted it's all in how you care for it. It's my fourth Nissan and three of them have lasted well over 100K - had a Datsun 280Z make it to 225K and a 93PU that I sold at 157K - my 4th is a 03 Frontier with 60K

I have a friend who has a 2001 Xterra which is a good vehicle but not too much power. I have a 2005 Xterra which has the new V-6 4.0 litre engine and I think if you could shell out some more money, that would be the way to go. It's wider and has more room than the Xterras before 2005 and the power is great! I have 27,000 miles on it and love it.

First things first trading from a sports car up to a SUV is a big change and the ride on the Xterra is rugged let me tell you. Reason being is its an offroad SUV but dont let that discourage you on buying it the nissan Xterra is an awesome vehicle and is very reliable... the SE is the higher end model. The price of 12,000 is very reasonable also.
2000–2001
During its first two years, there were three Xterra models. Base XEs came with the 4 cylinder KA24DE motor similar to the ones found in the Nissan Altima and 240SX, were manual transmission only, steel wheels, and lacked accessories such as the step rails and a roof rack.
XE Xterras were the main seller for Nissan. XEs could be configured with several option packages, to add features such as the roof rack, side step-rails, or the 3.3-litre V6. The XE proved to be the most popular of the trim levels, with more flexibility on equipment options. A fully loaded XE had almost all the features of the top-of-the-line SE model (minus the flip-up sunroof), while costing an average of $2,000 less.
The SE was the premium trim level for the Xterra. Everything which was an option on the XE came standard on the SE. Nissan, to set apart a fully-optioned XE and the SE added a flip-up sunroof and special badging to the back of the truck ("Xterra SE" rather than just "Xterra"). Several options were available for SE buyers; items such as mudflaps, carpeted floormats, cargo liners, and ventilation microfilters could be added for an additional charge.
Xterra was freshened for 2002. The interior received a redesigned dash and center console, while the biggest changes were to the top-of-the-line powerplant and the front end. In 2001 Nissan restyled the front end of the Frontier aggressively and added overhead clearance in the engine bay. In 2002 Nissan brought similar changes to the Xterra, including Nissan's new 210 hp 3.3-liter Roots Type Supercharger V6.
Color was also revised in 2002. Aztec Red and Kaki were dropped, while Shock Blue, Sedona, and Molten Lava were introduced. Atomic Orange was later added, but proved short lived. In addition, the audio systems were upgraded. The premium audio system, a 6-disk AM/FM/CD with 6 speaker setup, was replaced with a 300W Rockford Fosgate AM/FM/CD system with 8 speakers and a large subwoofer that took up a portion of the rear storage area.

You've probably already purchased, but my experience with my 2002 Nissan Xterra has been very good. I am @ 154K miles and have had no problems with it at all. I maintain it very well and replaced the spark plugs, wires, water pump and timing chain @ 105K miles as recommended. It just developed a power steering leak this past week, which may cost anywhere from $50-$500 depending on what and where it is leaking from. I would recommend a well maintained Xterra to anyone. The problem is, how well was the Xterra maintained that you are looking at? If it is relatively clean and looks good then the previous owner likely took care of it.

The 2005 truck is better. 2002 Xterria gets average gas mileage 17 to 21 It is a True SUV built on a pick up chassis so don't expect sedan quiet ride 4X4 version is quite capable off road truck. Quality It's a Nissan. Tune up platinum plugs every 90,000 and timing belt replacement. Not much go's wrong except the high side A/C hose will leak look for oily residue. 2005 and newer are better 4.0 liter engine more power same gas milage and chain driven camshafts. And so far even better build quality.
