To show respect for the person that has passed away.

For the believers, a church is a place that can give comfort and closure, especially in terms of a funeral, but for atheists like myself a church is just a man made building that has no greater or less value then a skyscrapper, school, office building or whatever. For that reason I would definitely go to a funeral, despite my non-belief because of my respect for the deceased's family and friends. I don't think I'd do it for the deceased, because they're dead, meaning they wouldn't know or care what you did for them anyways. I would, however, want to make the statement to the deceased's family and friends and also to myself that I did value this person's life so I would go and just hope I don't burst into flames. :-)

Of course. Funerals are largely for paying respects to the departed and support for the living. We share our feelings same as everybody.

I do, would, and have. I'm not one to let my views on organized religion stop me from going to a church funeral, especially when it's for someone I really cared for. I lost my friend Lucy to cancer, and she had a huge Catholic funeral. I was fine with it. It was about her and her life and how she lived, not about the church.

Absolutely! Would you refuse to go to an atheists funeral if it was held in a park and not a church? Or would you go to show respect to the deceased and the surviving family?

By the way, I also go to weddings in churches.

In my life i've been to very few funerals, but after my brother died,it was nice to see people there who cared about him and me.A church is just a building like any other business, just a creation man made.

Of course! It's about paying your respects for that person, not about a building or religion.

i'm pagan and don't normally go to funerals. i have a different take on death than most people, and don't need the closure that a funeral gives. i do go if it is someone very very close to support the living, not show respect for the dead

Of course.
I would go to church, synagogue, mosque, temple, anywhere, depending on the faith of the deceased.

Sure. A church is just a building. I don't reject the building.

If you were a atheist you would not be asking this question.
