I'm visiting NYC next week, and as a tourist and amateur photographer I would like to make a series of photographs of outdoor life in NY.. Is it permitted to take pictures outdoors in NYC ?? I've read about a new law in the make which could probit this ?? Any suggestions from New Yorkers would be great.. !

You can take pictures. For a while, you weren't permitted to take pictures in the subway - they didn't want terrorists to know what the inside of a subway car looks like? They lifted that ridiculous restriction.
I hope you have The Cloisters on your list of things to photograph - the prettiest spot in New York City. Fort Tryon Park overlooks the Hudson River

You will not have a problem taking pictures outside. I work in Manhattan and all the tourists take pictures of the buildings, parks, etc. Enjoy the scenery and have a great time!

Sure you can take pictures, just certain buildings have security (i.e. City Hall) and will not permit it......otherwise its fine.....the worst that could happen is some rent a cop will tell you to put your camera down...also NY is plenty safe, you will be fine...enjoy your trip here!

That law hasn't been enacted yet so yes you can take pictures of NYC. You can take pictures from atop of the Empire State building or the Top of the Rock, the Chrysler building, Wollman Rink, you can go on the Staten Island Ferry and take pictures of the NY skyline and the Statue of Liberty. You can take pictures of the Brooklyn bridge, where you can also take pics of the NY skyline, Manhattan bridge, and from a distance the Statue of Liberty and the Verazzano Bridge. You can go to Ground Zero and to the Wall street area and take a pic the famous bull. You can take pictures of Yankee Stadium, and the new Yankee Stadium in construction, Shea stadium, and the new Shea Stadium in construction, and the famous sculpture of the world from the world's fair in Queens. You can take pictures of the cyclone or the wonder wheel in coney island, brooklyn or go to any of the zoos and take pictures there.
And to answer your last question, and I won't dignify that with an answer.

You can take pictures almost anywhere, except in subway stations. You can even take pictures on some bridges (the Brooklyn Bridge is ok, the Verrazano Bridge - it is prohibited).

If your a tourist I stay in the downtown area you will not get mugged. Just take the pictures nobody even pays attention to the laws in NYC. That like saying you can't walk on the sidewalk. Trust me you will be fine. I used to work there. Never had any problems just mind your business.

Yes...you're allowed to take pictures just about anywhere...unless someone tells you you're not allowed, in which case, stopping would be your best option. On certain bridges you are NOT allowed to take pictures, and there will be signage making you aware of this.
NYC is the safest big city in the country, I'm offended that you think taking out your camera to take a picture is going to get you mugged. Have some common sense, keep your eye on your camera bag, and make sure it's zipped...just like you would anywhere else.
