Becuase of cultural and language differences. MAKE NO MISTAKE, THE SAME WILL HAPPEN IN THE SOUTHWEST U.S., WHICH IS WHY ILLEGAL IMMIGRAION MUST BE DEALT WITH USING NOTHING SHORT OF A FENCE. Language and culture are the two biggest reasons why y Canada is dealing with a seperatist movement, same thing happened to the former Yugoslavia.

Arnold Schwarzenegger (an immigrant himself) said it best when he advised hispanic migrants to turn off Telemundo, read English newspapers and listen to radio stations in English. They'll never learn functional English if all they do is immerse themselves in Spanish language media and never venture out of Spanish neighborhoods.

Somewhere on the internet is a video of a cat that is causing a family very high costs for water use. The cat discovered how to flush a toilet and then developed a keen interest in continuing this action almost endlessly.

Quebec has a similar keen interest today, however, they discovered the trick several decade ago, and, ever since then, instead of a toilet, they have been using the threat of separation to flush benefits, money and jobs from the Federal government, which inevitably comes at the expense of the family of Canadians.

Perhaps the cat is following their example, or it may be a very astute politician in its own right.

Quebec has a distinct culture that they feel will be stifled by remaining in Canada.

As a side note, although Quebec want sovereignty they would like to also maintain seat is the house of commons, be privy to federal funded programs and continue to use the currency, without actually paying taxes directly to canada.

There is no new world left to discover. Many of the French speaking citizens in Quebec feel they are under English speaking rule.
