More that you can count. I have seen how many dogs the AKC recognized and I forgot, but that is just one registry. American Pit Bull Terriers are not even recognized by the AKC, only the UKC (united kennel club) . Some breeds like the Jack Russel Terrier are not recognized by either the AKC or the UKC, becuase the JRT don't want to be recognized by them. So in the AKC they are called Parsons Russel Terrier and in UKC, I believe it is just the Russel Terrier in two size groups. Some breeds are rare is this country but recognized in other countries. Some rare breeds are only recongnized by the a rare dog breed registry. So it is really difficult to day just how many breeds of dogs there are.

Yes, hundreds of breeds. Not only do people call the same dog a different name, "American Pitbull" w/ "Staffordshire terrier" but they come out with these mixes, like puggles and soon they will be AKC. It's still growing.

A pet program we watched a day or two ago said the figure is over 400, but it wasn't any more specific than that.
