What exactly do find appalling? The fact that the prayer was shouted down, or that they were arrested for doing so?
In a modern society where the school will hand out birthcontrol to my 12 year old and not tynelol to my 8 year old,
where a US senator has proposed that native born American children must learn Spanish, where Georgia has ruled it unconstitional to display the Ten Commandements, where teachers can't lead a Christian prayer in school, where state capitals can't display a nativity scene, etc etc etc , you want me to upset about THIS---give me a break.
I personally am NOT appalled by the disruption. Many Americans no longer want Christian representation in politics and schools, yet you are willing allow a Hindu prayer!!!!
No prayer means NO PRAYER....................
I for one am glad they stood up and I don't care if they are from your beloved Texas, Utah, or New York or any points in between.

Gee, and I thought the conservative religious right were the ones complaining that there isn't enough religion in the public square. Proof once and for all that what they really mean is that there isn't enough of THEIR religion in the public square..
edit: lifeonloan. I suggest you do a little research. There has ALWAYS been prayer in Senate. Most commonly it's lead by the (Christian)Senate chaplain however there are often guest clergy invited to give the prayer. Therefore your "No prayer means no prayer" is completely ignorant, because in this case it SHOULD be "prayer means ALL prayer, not just Christian".

Blooming hec - I'm not often proud to be Brittish but in the light of a lot of what has been happening in America recently I'm feeling strangley patriotic, something I have never felt in 24 years!
I think it was however (if you have to have prayers, we have ordained ministers in our upper house but no prayer) a good move to introduce other religions. Doesn't it say in your constitution 'freedom OF religion' - not 'Freedom FROM all religion other than the type we like'?

Protesters interrupted the first-ever Hindu prayer in the US Senate. Officers removed the three and charged them.
What next.....?
That's why the USA is NOW a third world country !!!
USA SUCKS
politicians are the second lowest people on the face of the Earth... the lowest are religious believers.

Tis very sad some shamed the name of the Christ by that behavior. Look on the bright side though. Maybe this will be the catalyst to getting prayers OUT of our government.

it was the Christian Right anti-abortion group Operation Save America
they interrupted him by loudly asking for God's forgiveness for allowing the ''false prayer'' of a Hindu in the Senate chamber.
"Lord Jesus, forgive us father for allowing a prayer of the wicked, which is an abomination in your sight," the first protester shouted. "This is an abomination. We shall have no other gods before You."
Democratic Senator Bob Casey, who was serving as the presiding officer for the morning, immediately asked the sergeant-at-arms to restore order. But they continued to protest as they were headed out the door by the marshals, shouting, "No Lord but Jesus Christ!" and "There's only one true God!"
Zed, sporting a saffron robe, a rudraksh mala round his neck, and a prominent tilak on his forehead, then nervously went through the invocation chosen from the Rig Veda and Bhagavad Gita.
"Let us pray," he began, "We meditate on the transcendental glory of the deity supreme, who is inside the heart of the earth, inside the life of the sky and inside the soul of heaven. May he stimulate and illuminate our minds.
"Lead us from the unreal to real, from darkness to light, and from death to immortality. May we be protected together. May we be nourished together. May we work together with great vigor. May our study be enlightening
The sentiments were evidently lost on the fundamentalists.
