SOOOOO RUDE!
I once heard the hostess passing them around to say,"well, the bride is so busy with work and school, so let's just help her out with this".
If I took the time to go to a store, find a registry list, print it out, look all over the store for the item, pay for it, wrap it, and come to a shower to see her open it, by gum, she has time to write a two sentence note & lick an envelope!

I don't think it's tacky. I did that at a baby shower recently and actually thought it was a great idea. It saves you a lot of time and energy, you know you have the right address, and it's very easy for the guests to write down their own address once! Now, i understand that you're not happy about them being addressed in pencil, but it WOULD be tacky and rude if you didn't use the envelopes. Just use them or trace over the pencil written address in pen.

Yeah, I'd probably be a little put off by this. If the invitation was mailed to them in the first place, the person sending them obviously has the addresses of the guests. Taking the time to address the note you're sending to the guests to thank them for the gift they spent their time and money on is the least one could do.

I think it's fine! My sister-in-law had guests at my bridal shower (which she threw for me) fill out envelopes and it really saved me a ton of time getting the thank you cards out. You're helping the bride and groom out and making things a little less stressful for them. I don't think it's rude at all.
*edit.... I just read the other answers and just wanted to add this.... I think, sure, if it's the bride who's asking people to do it, it might not be the most tasteful. But how many times is it really the bride who's organizing these things? It's the person throwing the shower, and they're just trying to help in any way they can.*

It's happened to me and I think it is tacky. What I did for a friend of mine when I threw the shower was I made up a box with thank you cards w/envelopes & stamps, and I printed an extra set of labels from the invites, and I made her return address labels. It took a lot of the work and stress of the thank yous away - especially so close to the wedding.

Absolutely rude and tacky. If a bride can't take a few minutes to address an envelope for me..then I'd really rather not bother going to a store to pick out the perfect gift for her...
What would make more sense (and what I'm planning on doing for my sister) is for the people throwing her the shower to give her a list of the addresses, or print out some address labels with everyone's address that they mailed an invite to.
But UGH I agree, NEVER make your guests do something that you should do.

I think there would have been less tackier ways to get everyone's current address. One talk to whoever sent out the invites or have everyone fill out an index card with the info. One of the bridesmaid could have annouced that the bride was hoping to build her x-mas card list etc. as she might not know her hubbies family addresses. I know this is the case with me and my bf's family. My bf tends not to sent things by snail mail so anytime I need an address for an aunt etc he's clueless for the address.

I think so. You took the time to come to the shower and buy a present she could address her own envelopes or the person that gave her the shower could do it for her. But just put this behind you getting married can be very stressful especially if you are having a large wedding.
If this was a baby shower please forgive her she is going to be very busy with the new baby.

I don't think it's rude. I not only saves the bride/groom (or whoever) time but it assures that they have the correct address to mail the thank you card. I am doing this for my daughter's baby shower. The envelopes will then go into a drawing (at the shower) for a small gift.

I think it is very tacky. Yet I have seen this at a baby shower for a co worker. Most of the people there were from work and she did not send out invites just gave to us at work. So she did not have our address so that did not bother me.
Everyone is different.
