It depends on what company you work for, and what your area of expertise is. I am a mechanical engineer in the defense industry. My work consists primarily of designing fixtures used to test the operation of components that become part of aircraft. I use solid modeling software to design these fixtures and for other projects. I am also responsible for providing the drafting department with the information they need to create a dimensioned drawing, and then I provide the manufacturing department with this information so that my fixture can actually be built.

I specialized in solid mechanics, and now I'm getting a masters in mechanical engineering with a focus in manufacturing. If you focused on fluid mechanics instead, you might be working on fluid transport systems, perhaps determining what flow rates will meet certain requirements for pressure and temperature.

Please do not take Spring Vs Fall's answer as credible. It is not. That sounded more like structural engineering / general odd job.

Being a mechanical engineer is all about improving upon things. It usually involves some kind of creative design work followed up by the practical application of that design.

You could be working on virtually anything but the main objective is always the same, to make things or do things better than they are already being done.

Usually a Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the Building of a Structure which is made of Steel...

This is very much like when a Main Contractor builds a Tank or a Tank Farm, which will also require Pipelines & Pipe Supports to hold those pipelines, and there will definitely be Structural Steel involved in this whole thing.

Vessels & Equipments will also be there to build from Zero...

This kind of Engineering is very much required in the Arabian Gulf Countries Area (Or Persian Gulf if u like)...where plenty of Mechanical Construction Works get executed in a large scale within those Oil Countries...and this is valid for both NEW CONSTRUVTION AS WELL AS MAINTENANCE & REPAIR...

You will be taken like Hot Cakes in that area if u were one heck of a good Engineer...even as a beginner, u will still be needed....

Get done with it & stay in contact with me...I will pass your CV to where it belongs with those Main Contractors doing such & similar jobs...

I could be with much of assistance f u like...

Take Care and get some high Grades...

It is an excellent major; I promise u...
