This minister lost everything for questioning the existance of hell. Is this just a huge misunderstanding or is it another example of how "thinking" is looked down upon in Christianity. What are your thoughts?

I think it's a prime example of how sheep-like some (i said SOME not generalizing) Christians can be. Over 5,000 people left because of this!! I wonder who was the one that REALLY decided for them to leave. Usually there's one "leader" in a group like that and a whole bunch of people follow. It happened something like that in the church I used to be forced to go to.

It's really sad that Hell, something supposedly created for sinners and evil-doers, is such a primary piece of Christian dogma. For believing in a god that's supposed to be all loving, these people don't even want to HEAR that this god may be more merciful than they once thought. Wow.

**edit**
I wonder what would have happened if the preacher was white...

I hate how people try to justify heresy!
Thinking?
What if somebody came up with the idea of a new math where 2+2=17 and so on, would he be considered a "thinker" and should he be allowed to teach?
NO on both accounts!
Christianity may have some new discoveries yet to unfold, revelation and prophesy being what they are, but contrdicting what foundations already exist and are well established is not even close to the same ballpark
Besides this particular heresy is not new, Charles Taze Russel was excommunicate by 2 or 3 christian religions in the 1800s for this very thing, he, a creation of God, decided that hell was personally offensive, therefor they creation would rewrite the creator's message.
This is the beginning of the cult, commonly known as the Jehova's Witnesses.
Thinking outside of the box?
Well the box is what is believed to be the word of God, taught by the Bible in both explicit doctrine and by example.
Outside the box would be the near perfect definition of blasphemy, heresy, and sin

This is jus one more example and proof to the fact that chrstianity is not a religion,, they just call it that,, infact it is really a governing body just after power. Like in the middle ages, when someone tdid not agree with them they tortured tem into confessing something they did not even know to begin with and then killed them because of their confession. This way they had power over the people in a controlling manner. Also that knowedge and money is power, so they controled that as well. Only selected people may study,, monks and they wealthy that could afford to pay them. So they wanted more power with this. And then we will not even mention what they did with the Templar Knights. Used and abused them, and then the same as with this man that questioned hell,, they took, or must I say stole and pillage everything the Templars owned cause they wanted to add that power to their own and was afriad of the Templars, so they made up those terrible lies and destoyed them.

And what happend later in life, when society changed and some of the things in their laws became acceptable,, their laws also changed. How can they call themselves a religion if they keep changing their beliefs to "fit-in" with current day living. For example, a few years ago you will go straight to hell for commiting suicide or being gay (jsut to mention I have no problem with gay people),, but now look at their point of view. If asked then they can come up with a clever way to disguise the fact that they have n clue. Isn't it them that says give to the poor, so how can they have so many car and big houses in their posession.

Yhe bible is 100% accurate. Jesus spoke more on hell than he did on Heaven. Yes hell exists. It is a place of departed souls that have rejected Jesus and the christians that are not really christians. Hell is real, and the preacher should have know better. He should not have become a precher if he did not believe Jesus 100% Jesus spoke about it a lot becasue he wanted to warn people of the punishment sin if they did not repent and turn to Jesus. Hell is real. Many people from around the world experienced that place of horror and when they were brought back either by resusitaion, by God although being brought back was being brought back by God as they had a second chance and not every one does and it has been a life changing experience for them. And many of them have become pastors and preaches becasue of it. Hell is real, and do nto let anyone fool you into believeing that place is not. It is just as real and even more so than this earth, the spritual realm and the eartly one is different.

thats not thinking outside the box that is breaking down the box and making one up yourself
some people are going to believe him and think, well there is no hell so why bother doing good, they should be doing good for the glory of God but if there are no repercussions why bother - i'll rob my neighbor instead of help him and we all are going to Heaven only i'll get mine on earth too
yeah that sounds like a great way to live

- one last point - whenever someone "hears" from God if it is contradictory from anything in the Bible then it wasn't from God - he either heard from the devil or his own thoughts but definitely not God - he is the weak minded one to give into that and he will pay the price - God will judge

Because all Christians believe that Jesus is the only way we are saved from hell and damnation We can't decide that hell is not real, if we do then we can not be Christians. We have to believe in all aspects straight from the word of God we can not decide which parts of the Bible fit our lives, we need to fit our lives to the Bible and then we have a shot at doing the right thing. The word Christian means Christ like. Well He definitely believed in Hell, so to be like Him we also have to believe.

You can think outside of the box as long as it lines up with the Word of God. If not, it isn't Christian. If the Bible should be false in one thing, then it can't be relied upon.

I think there will always be plenty of people to "kick you to the curb" for thinking that which doesn't align with what they think/feel/believe/see.

Hell, hades, sheol is in the Bible. Look it up.

If one does not subscribe to the Word of God one should not be in a position of teaching it.

Plain and simple.
