I understand that is not a trick question!
Can we agree that religion is the same word as cult?
Yes it is true that one cannot serve to masters. But - The problem lies within the interpretation of the subject at hand, for instance.
My interpretation of God may differ from yours!
Where did my interpretation come from?
What is the depth into which I studied the subject we are discussing?
In the eastern (Hindu Yoga) sense of the word God or The Unknowable it takes on an entirely different perspective than our western viewpiont. Even the western mysteries dipict the diety as an action hero involved in the everyday world with us, to a point.
However there are other texts that show one that there is another viewpoint. For instance, Spirituality, metaphysics, and even some philosophy all point towards certain aspects of the God-Head as a creator of all that there is.
Unfortunately - There is an interpretation involved within all of this, so the end result is that each person is responsible for their own belief, and when you let that be outside of yourself then where does that leave/lead you?

Give your tears, gypsy, or I will take them from you.
Seriously, the tie-dyed bandana has got to go.
And trying to separate God and religion only creates a false differentiation. All it serves to do is free the concept of God from current systems of religion, which, in turn, gives the individual freedom to formulate their own beliefs.
Which, you know, makes another religion.
None of which is bad. It just means that religion is nothing more than a spiritual worldview with a means of implementation. Anytime human beings engage God, you're going to get religion.
Sure, it might be a bit more ideal and spiritual in the beginning, but it quickly calcifies into something practical and livable. Not every person is a poet or a prophet. Anyone who tries to force others into a revelation experience understands neither God nor humanity.
Hail Satan,
Lazarus

To serve a master entails you are a slave and for many people through brain-washing and propaganda have become a slave to their religious beliefs and traditions. To be a slave to a god is not any better. Slaves are easy and cheap to come by but that does not make them spiritual or worthy.
If one has taken a master then they are a slave and what true higher power would want a groveling follower over a self-aware person that thinks for themselves? The thought that God/dess how ever you want to perceive the divine would chose blind faith over thoughtful inquiry is human vanity. Since so many people can not control their own lives they try to enslave others, since in the christian bible (Genesis first chapter) man and woman was made in their image, everyone assumes God wants everyone to be his servant.
I say throw off you chains of ignorance and blind worship and live a life that is more God like, not slave like.

What makes you think you cannot serve two masters. People serve multiple masters all the time. You serve your government masters, you serve your boss, you may serve your religion, and, if you are a man and know what's good for you, you are going to serve you wife. Certainly that is what most men do.

Religion is basically a strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny.
That supernatural power is God.
I agree that God and religion are not the same but that religion is about and for God.
