I gave her some Benedryl and it started to help, but I can't take her to the vet yet. My boss is refusing to pay me.And here in Kansas, if you take a dog to da vet & can't pay, they'll either keep them & give away or I've had a vet put my 2 Labs down cause I couldn't afford the bill. So please HELP!

Skin allergies are common in Pitbulls. I have suffered though this with some of my dogs. Also juvinal demodicsis (red mange) could be her problem. It is usually outgrown. It is caused by a weak immune system in pups. As they get older and stronger,it gets better. If it starts in an older dog it is a different story. But without going to the vet for a skin scraping to look at under a microscope, there is no way to know that for sure. It is just common in pit puppies. Keep giving her the benedryl, 3 times a day until the hives are gone.. I believe she developed hives due to a bug bite. Especially if she has not had hives before. Some dogs are very allergic to spiders and other biting bugs. You should be Ok with the benedryl. Knowing that she may be allergic to bug bits, watch her in the future for facial swelling. That is a more seriouse reaction, and most of the time requires a steriod injenction.Always keep the benedrly on hand and the quicker you give it to her the better.
Please do not fast your dog she is a puppy and they can get low blood sugar and die. You dog already has medical propblems that are undiagnosed. You dont want to hurt her by not feeding her. This does not sound like a food allergy anyway. Good luck. I know that skin problems are very frustrating.

Mental note never move to Kanas, that is awful. I have a Lab and a Pit Bull both have allergies. My Pit has extremely sensitve skin and has food allergies. We know what food he is allergic to and he can not have any beef. That takes care of the food issues and that is a long trial and error process. He also can not have your typical flea meds. He breaks out like crazy with hives. So we use all natural flea treatments. My Lab has environmental allergies and I hate using steriods and other vet meds. So I know use all natural treatments by Azmira. The stuff works great and there are NO side effects. It is Allerg' Free and Yucca Intensive by Azmira. Any ways with hives you want to stay on the Benedryl. Not only until it clears but following days after. The hives will not disappear instantly especially if your dog is still in contact with the allergen. She may have to stay on the Benedryl. My Pit and Lab stayed on it thru the summer. But know both have the all natural treatments. But if for some reason they get hives they HAVE to go and stay on Benedryl. It may take day. Up the dosage to the max if it persist. My dogs weigh about 90 to 110 lbs and the vet they could get up to 6 a day.

Honestly....
You just cannot afford to own a dog. Don't get another one.

Pits have a lot of autoimmune disorders like allergies, mange, etc. Go ahead and continue to give her benadryl. One dose would not be enough to solve the problem. You can give her mg per pound dosages every four hours up to four times a day. So if she weighs 50 lbs she can have 50mg of Benadryl every four hours up to four times a day.

If that doesn't solve the problem, then she needs steroids. It would be cruel to keep a dog in suffering, so if you care for this dog you will surrender her to a shelter. That sounds harsh, but it is true.

I will tell you that if some dogs have severe allergies that are difficult to treat some people do choose euthanasia. It is kinder than having the dog suffer if treatments don't help.

And I agree with the last poster. Don't fast a dog. That is just cruel especially to a puppy.

I AM NOT A VET. . . just want to make that clear, but I have been told by vets to give Benadryl to dogs.

Here is a dosage chart I found.

Dosage every 8 hours
Dogs under 30 lbs and Cats : 10 mg
Dogs 30-50 lbs: 25 mg
Dogs over 50 lbs: 50 m

Don't use the liquid as it has alchohol in it and use only the regualr stuff.

I would suggest that if you can't afford veterinary care for your dog that you should consider turning her over to a rescue group. They will find her a home where she can be properly cared for. I don't understand why anyone would have their dogs put down becuase they can't afford to pay vet bills.

remind me never to move to Kansas . keep giving her the benedryl and see if that helps do this for a couple of days and tell your boss either he pays you or you are going to the labor board and report him for withholding wages and that is against the law . I hope this helps good luck .
