PETA is an extremist group. They say they have the best interest of the animals in mind, but I don't believe it. Although I have no proof of it, I would suspect that many of their "under-cover videos" are even staged, which is sad.
They also don't think people should have pets. There's no way I could support that.
PETA kills animals: http://www.petakillsanimals.com/
I also could never NEVER support a group that intentionally inflicts psychological damage to children and tries to get to the parents by USING the children and attempting to make the children fearful of their own parents. They have handed out the following comics to children:
You Mommy Kills Animals - http://www.furisdead.com/feat-momfur.asp
Your Daddy Kills Animals - http://www.fishinghurts.com/feat-newcomic.asp
I don't have all the information handy, but at one point a year or so ago, I decided to read through the PETA site. What I found was a wealth of mis-information and information skewed to support their "cause".
In short, they are a destructive group that go about things completely the wrong way. They "protest" by interferring with others in ways that should not be done.
* They disrupted VS fashion show a couple years ago: http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2002/11/15/1037080913501.html
* Although they have discontinued the practice, they used to attack people with spray-paint that were wearing fur coats. (Their website now says "if you have a fur coat, donate it to a homeless person.")
(There are numerous other examples, you can do a search on the internet and find them.)

I could go into more than a few crazy things that they've done, but I'll try to keep it simply to dogs.
I didn't realize that the had changed their stance about not wanting people to own animals at all. At one time, I knew that they were against ownership of any purebred animals. They felt that there were enough dogs in shelters that people didn't need to breed purebred animals.
For this reason, PETA is behind may of the extremely restrictive laws that are being considered. Essentially they come in and try to eliminate the ability of people to own dogs that might be bred, or they make it cost prohibitive.
They are EXTREMELY effective at getting Hollywood types to support their cause and then using these folks to promote their causes.
I can't remember how long ago it was, but they have always had a lunatic fringe that has been associated with them. They always deny any support, but there have been a couple of incidents that were traced back to folks who were on the PETA board.
For me, although I might agree with some of their ideas, they have become so radical about dog ownership that I cannot support them in any way.
By the way, in some communities PETA has petitioned United Way and been able to get on United Way's money distribution program. If you contribute to United Way, you might want to check to see if PETA is one of the listed charities. You have to call where your money is going to find out.

I ought to consider maximum others, PETA has the superb reason yet are making use of the incorrect procedures. somebody asked an identical question a mutually as in the past and that i'll repeat what I suggested then. at situations it takes radical action to deliver a reason to public gentle. the female's suffarage circulation, as an occasion, did some enormously radical issues for his or her situations theory I doubt lots of it would advance an eyebrow at present. in spite of the incontrovertible fact that as time strikes on and human beings become extra conscious some communities seem to swing to a extra radical stance, which easily does them extra injury than stable. i've got seen the PETAkills website and to be honest i'm as doubtful of their info as i'm approximately a number of PETA's claims. not asserting that the numbers are not suitable, they are there signed via PETA themselves, yet, we have no way of understanding WHY those animals have been euthanised. on the different hand I easily have regular situations the place smaller communities have asked PETA for some help in gaining exposure for a reason and been completely surpassed over. for my section, i recognize animals are mistreated on a daily basis. i recognize animals are starved, overwhelmed or have undesirable sorting out completed on them. I take care of this in my own way. I rescue undesirable animals, use products that are cruelty unfastened and attempt to softly nudge human beings to become extra conscious of what discomfort their lipstick or bathe purifier would have led to. If I donate, that is to small animal shelters the place i recognize the animals truly are the suitable precedence.

Peta is an animal rights organization -it was founded to stop testing of products on animals but has become one of the leading animal acitvists organizations in the world. They object to the wearing of real fur, testing products with animals, circus's treatment of animals, and are big advocates of spaying and nuetering your animals. They do sometimes go overboard and get themselves arrested in their zeal to do this work.,
My personal opinion is that most PETA followers are good people with animals interests in mind. However there are some members who are "way out there" who have caused some problems with other people- they have no tolerance for anyone who disagrees with them. They have thrown red paint on people wearing fur coats, to signify thier belief that we should not wear real fur. Many of the top leaders have been arrested as a result of actions like these.

If they had the best interest of the animals in mind, they'd focus on shutting down Puppymills and Commercial breeders apposed to those that do thorough health testing and possibly produce 1 litter every other year or so. They need to target their efforts where the problem is, not every dog owner in the country!

PETA has good intentions and a good message to spread, but they have some extremist that make them look bad. They have, in the past, killed a mass amount of dogs before, another answerer provided you with the link.
Mostly, PETA works on trying to turn people in to vegetarians/vegans through their videos. They can get to teens easily because they work with concerts and even hand out fliers while at concerts. However, as far as animal rights goes, they can't do very much besides spread the word because the government considers them a terrorist organization.

They are nuts. They think any animal ownership is evil and cruel. And they have been known to resort to violence. I think their ideas started with compassion, but they have drawn in too many people who are possibly unstable. Not all animals can be returned to the wild.

Supposedly years ago when I was showing my dog PETA was letting crated dogs loose on the show grounds. Dogs got lost, HBC and into fights. Many of us lost respect for PETA and we had to padlock our crates.
