The only thing that I can relate the word useless to, is your question. Without adequate information, I can not properly address your question.

I dare say most of them wouldn't seem so "useless" if they weren't prevented or dissuaded from doing their jobs at every turn by beaurocrats and bleeding-hearts. A simple arrest procedure is hampered with reams of paperwork, and more often than not, the offender placed under arrest is allowed to go free without any real punishment anyway. If you were in a job where you were constantly bogged down with paperwork instead of being allowed to go and do what you are supposed to be doing, and everytime you managed to do your job, someone came along and ruined your hard work, would you keep putting in 100% effort every day? I doubt it.
Perhaps it's not that they are useless, but rather it is society that has become so violent and generally out-of-hand that the role of a police officer seems ineffective these days. Perhaps if all our cops weren't stuck behind desks filling in stupid forms accounting for every move they made that day, there would be more time for them to be out on the beat, showing an active presence in society.
It's our fault as much as theirs. Likely even more so. You want to make a difference? Join the police force, and put your life on the line day in day out for little above minimum wage.
Cheers.

I have a friend who is a police officer. He drives the IRV (Instant Response Vehicle). I've spoken to him many times about this subject and he agrees it is all a joke. If they arrest someone it can take pretty much all the shift to fill out the paperwork that is demanded by the higher authority. Many police are stuck at the police station doing this for just one arrest when they agree they would be better off out on the streets. As the prisons are full, there is a huge problem with where to put prisoners, it's basically a one in one out system, so if they have a back log of prisoners that have been sentenced already but as there is no space at the prisons they are sent back to the police stations to wait for a place to come up. If a prison place comes up a 100 miles away they then have to transfer the prisoner there.. He says their whole shifts are spent doing paperwork and carting prisoners arround the country to free up space in the cells at the police station. There are a large number of CSO's on the streets in our town simply because the police don't have the manpower to do it themselves or the money to recruit more officers.

I don't have a bad thing to say about the police service and local beat officers have made a great difference in my area..
If anything your probably to blame for your dilemma just like one of those usual bullied drivers who think the whole worlds are against them cause the drive like twits.
I lost count of how many neighbours use to say i saw this, he done this, then for me to ask did you call the police? No i don't want to get involved.

Because as the old saying goes 'the public get the police force they deserve' and whilst so many people like yourself are complaining and criticising everything they do or dont do they are totally tied up with silly initiatives to please the politicians and liberals that they havent time or inclination to get on with the real work.

It's pay scales. There are some really good coppers out there but you'll never see them because the cream goes to sorting out serious crimes - Terrorism, human/drug trafficking, murder etc.
The rest of the beat police are employed to keep the peace, driving offences, petty crime, vandalism, the stuff that we complain about on a day to day basis, but in the grand scheme of things is reasonably low on the agenda - and hence, lower paid.
Unfortunately like everything else you get what you pay for. That's why we only ever see (or not as the case may be) apparently useless police out and about.

Just finished a shift and simply too tired from work to write an in depth answer to an ill composed sweeping statement. As such I just refer you to some answers above and if you could even come close to doing the job then do it!!!

Its generally not the Police officers who are useless but the laws, regulations and red tape that we have to put up with.
Why don't you give me some facts to back up your comments, or is it that you havn't got any?

Your questions bear a remarkable resemblance to those of a certain John O, who was bombarding this board this morning until he was argued off the face of the earth by a Mr Gump. Now, you wouldn;t be John O in a hapless disguise, would you? You are, aren't you????
