Ask the sales person to tilt the couch back so you can see the skeleton. Now-a-days it is made with a pint frame, not the best but will do. When the couch is upright kneel on it and press against the back, if it has movement, the frame is weak. The same goes for the arms, press against them to see if they have movement, they shouldn't. The fabric of course is a matter of choice but look for something easy to clean and durable. Leather lasts a long, long time and can be easily cleaned. A sofa bought at a typical furniture dealer generally has the life expectancy of 5 years, the same as cars made today. Once the loan is paid, time to get a new one. Taking the advice given you can extend that time span a few years. Also, if you have an old sofa that is solid but needs recovering, consider that. The older the sofa the better quality of workmenship went into it. I have a friend with a 30 year old couch, recovered 3 times, looks new!

The frame should be of good quality wood, not pine. The springs should be 8-way hand tied and the cushions should be foamed and stuffed densely and preferrably filled with some down. Fabric is your choice and is priced according to grade. The higher the grade, the higher the cost. When you are shopping for a sofa, it's also a good bet that if it's offered at $399 rather than say $1500, you aren't looking at quality. There are many quality lines of furniture. If you buy well, a quality piece can last forever unless you change your decor or your style.

The cost. Higher price generally means higher quality. The brand name. Some brands specialize in average quality. Some specialize in high quality. Sit on it. If you like it, buy it.
