Yeah, it is kind of a crazy question, how do you compare Tiger tanks to Roman phalanxes? I just like to hear the variety of well-known formations throughout history who were above their contemporaries....not so much rated against each other. So how does one judge the 'best'? ...i think based on victories, tactics, campaigns, leadership, courage, etc....

Stonewall Brigade ftw. But then again I may be a little biased considering I'm from NC. The man was a genius, he would have had Iraq finished in less than a week!

Are you going to give them all sticks, slings and stones or modern weapons, modern transport and air superiority? I don't think there is any means of making a rational choice. (And you left out Army Rangers and Green Berets.)
