For subsidized/unsubsidized Stafford loans you would need to provide the ususal: name, address, date of birth, social security number, etc. Background checks are not required on Stafford loans. If you are getting a private loan or a PLUS loan a background check may be required as well as income information.

The federal Stafford loan program does not require a cosigner. If you haven't yet applied for those loans you should do so at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.

Cosigners will need to provide full name, address, phone number, social security number, and sometimes employer information. They may also have to submit previous years tax form and a current pay stub depending on the lender's policies.

There are many good companies to work with. Check with your school's financial aid office for suggestions.
