Everybody, yes of course God has many biblical names, but let's get beyond that - he has one common name that the majority of Christians use: "God".

10 points goes to the most creative NEW name - not a regurgitation of old ones. So far "Godfrey" is in the running.

1 - Christians did not give God his name.
2 - God's actual name is YHWH. There are many pronunciations of this name, but the two most common are Yahweh and Jehovah.
3 - YHWH does not mean, "God." It means, "I AM." It is a statement about God's Omnipresence and His eternal nature.
4 - The reason most people still refer to YHWH as God comes from the Jewish tradition. They used the word Elohim, which means "Lord" in place of YHWH because they believed that His name was so Holy that they were not worthy to even say it out loud. Since the first Christians were Jews that tradition has carried on, even through new languages.
***EDIT***
Give him a new name? Let's just give you a new name! So far "Idiot" is in the lead.
I'm sorry if that seems rude, but I find your comments very offensive. God has a name, and there are reasons why Christians usually do not use that name. Who are you to give the Almighty a new name for your amusement?

Actually Jehovah Witnesses believe his name is Jehovah. In the past, we're talking hundreds of years ago his name was considered too sacred to be pronounced by human lips therefore some translations of the bible changed his name to just say "God" which is incorrect because there are many "gods" too many religions. In Hebrew it is pronounced "Yah Weh."

Christians are not unimaginative. They were kept in the dark by their religions as to the true name of God. In the King James version of the Bible, the name of God is repeatedly mentioned and that is Jehovah. Some Scriptures or bible texts have been modified a lot of times, deleting and omitting the name of Jehovah because they did not want the people to know His name. In one religion, they propagated the belief that Jesus Christ and God the Father are one and the same God and person (this is questionable because God is Spirit, not a human being) so if they allow the name of Jehovah to be that of the Father, how is the Son of God called Jesus Christ? This comes out contradicting their own false teaching. If you truly want to know the truth, read all versions of the Bible. The good bible says: "Seek and you shall find."

What nonetheless surprises me is that "Christians" can no longer be sure God and Father are titles. I mean i comprehend of the lack of information of the clergy and laziness of the laity, yet come on! Psalms 80 3:18 needless to say shows His own call to be Jehovah or Yahweh. nonetheless the call interprets in any different case in different languages, what's substantial inspite of the language is to apply that call and not in easy terms a call. the main substantial subject matter of the Bible is to compliment God's call. which means pretty? Christians are to apply that call.

Actually, the God that we christians worship is the same God that the Jews worship. Since Jesus is believed by christians to be the Messiah that was prophesied in the old testament. So yah-weh or jehovah, or el-shaddai, or Elohim, are all the same God.

God is named that because even 10,000 years ago...Heebs were great at PR...
Think about it, every time someone mentions a "god," if "your god" is NAMED "God," its a free plug...Its free advertising. Dirty but efficient advertising and shady, unfulfillable promo-promises are what set the Judeo-Christian churches (and American cultural phenomenon,) apart. Throw in the concept that he's the "God of god's" suggesting that all the other gods worship HIM, (and your a sackless weenie if you worship somebody that worships somebody else,) and you have a marketing campaign that could only be beaten by a church that promises eternal debauchery on the condition that you show up to pick up your check for 10 million dollars at a church location near you...
New names?
How about "GoogilyMoogily."
or..."Shazam!!!" (Exclamation points integral part of name...)
or...justify all caps for acronym, "GAUD" (Generic Anthropomorphism of Universal Divinity...)
or..."Buck Almighty...Okay I'm losing my momentum here...

It's not a lack of creativity but a stroke of marketing genius which robbed all competing gods of their godhood. Plus, it muddied the waters of discourse sufficiently that the priestcraft could consolidate its power without arousing too much suspicion among the populace.

"God" isn't a name; it's a title.
The God of the Christian bible is named YHWH (well, He's actually named that in Hebrew, but that's what the usual transliteration is.) This is usually rendered as "the LORD" in English translations.
The origin of using "God" instead of God's name is probably rooted in Judaism. Traditionally, in Judaism, the utterance of God's name, YHWH, has been forbidden. This was true before the birth of Jesus of Nazareth; when Christianity began to gain many followers several centuries later, they probably adopted this custom, as Christianity branched off of Judaism.
Also, using "God" as a form of address isn't limited to Christians--Reform Jews often use "God." Muslims often use "Allah," which means "God." In at least one original ancient Greek text I have read, someone speaking to Zeus addresses him as the Greek translation of "God."
I feel your question is leading and presumes something that isn't true. Christians didn't name their god "God," and many other religions use "God" (or a suitable translation in another language) as a primary form of address.

The purpose is twofold.
1.) God with a capital G trumps all other "petty" gods.
2.) God is actually an acronym for Gerbil On Drugs, thus explaining God's erratic behavior in the Bible.

God has over 100 names & every name has very good meaning of his extrmely good quality which man can never have. Arrahman, Arrahim, Almali, Alquddoos , Assalam, almomin , Almohaimin, Albari, Alauwal, Alaakhir ... etc., I cannot write their meanings(see on Google search)here. U r referring to that Bible which is neither original nor authentic like old testament too , both were distorted out of proportion by Christians & Jews respectively so much that nothing in them is original. That's why every year both are 'amended' through so called research & so both have several versions & in them they criticise their own messangers of god(prophets) who are supposed to be perfect gentle men, all mistake & error free as all prophets are cared perfectly by God. they all are innocents throughout their lives . That's why they were ideal persons to bring the teachings from God through Angel Gabriel as perfect life codes. Whether you call those teachings to be books or anything but you cannot deny them. According to Islam Adam, Ibrahim(Abraham), Ismail, Ishaq(Issac), Mooda(Moses), Daood(David), Isaa(Jesus) etc. all were Islamic prophets & brought Islamic teachings(messages) of religion of nature. Prophet Muhammed Rasoolullah(pbuh) told stories about in detail. Jews & Christians think that the last prophet is yet to come as written in their so called books(distorted ones) But according to Quraan & so, Islam, the last prophet Muhammed came & went after completing his work & no prophet will come further. That is the major difference otherwise Jews & Christinans too are Islamic brothers & sisters of all Muslims. They should understand that Islamic message is not there at all that catch all of them innocents & kill only b coz their faith differs though the purpose of all faiths & teachings was to create a peaceful civilized atmosphere in the world where there is complete honesty & justice for everyone. Even if faiths differ b coz of misunderstandings I 'd appeal all my non-Muslim brothers & sisters to try their level best to achive that abovementioned purpose for which human being was created & brought on the earth. I'm sorry that I stretched too long. Thanks for patience in reading. For any slip or unknowingly mistake kindly excuse me.
I don't think Christians are unimaginative in anything.
