Because of demographics, Mandarin Chinese is the most spoken language in the world. This was the consensus against what I found on line.

The rest fluctuated between Hindi, English and Spanish. The main reason for fluctuation was the year the list was published. Even the wikipedia article has a disc lamer that the neutrality of the article may not be an accurate representation.

One thing is for sure, Mandarin Chinese has always had the most speakers due to its ever expanding population.

There are two things to consider:

1) The language with the most native speakers is Mandarin (there is no such language as "Chinese").

2) The language with the most native AND nonnative speakers is English

So, if you go strictly by the word "use" in your question, and define "use" to mean both native and nonnative speakers, then ENGLISH is the most USED language in the world.

The most used language in the world? My guess would have to be split--either Chinese (not including dialects, of course) or English. Chinese simply because of population; English because so many business transactions are conducted from and concerned with Wall Street.

Right now it is English. But by 2050 it will be Mandarin. By simple population growth of the Chinese. Perhaps it may happen by 2040, or five years sooner I don't know but the language most used now is English.
