i recently moved to the states and i don't have any assets what so ever and i am currently unemployed. do i need to file taxes?

Probably. If you are not a citizen I don't know how it works, but I know as a citizen I still had to file taxes when I had no income. Depending on your circumstances you can even get money back even when you didn't pay any taxes.

I would either call the IRS or go their web page at www.irs.gov - it would be much better to get an answer directly from them instead of finding out the hard way that someone here was misinformed.

Assuming that you will have some kind of income before the year ends, you will need to file taxes. If your income is from a job, then taxes will be withheld from your paycheck and you file a tax return by April 15, 2008.

If your income is from a business, you will need to make estimated payments 4 times a year with the next payment being due September 15. You will still need to file a tax return.

Have you had any income? If it is below a certain amount you would not need to file taxes. If you have had no income you would not need to file taxes.

I'm not sure what the cut-off amount is, but you should be able to find out from any tax preparer.
