the lottery is the worst form of gambling. especially california's.
the best bet, i think, is to get the Quick Picks. thats where most of the jackpots seem to come from. don't spend more than $10.
your chances are slim to win anything. just know that the odds are heavily against you.

The odds of winning is in the millions, so losing is normal and winning is unusual. You will get a lot of lose, lose and lose. But one big win will make up all the loses. :)
